The product is applied in molten form with a compatible 3M hot melt applicator and develops handling strength rapidly as it cools. Its typical open time is approximately 25 seconds on non-metallic substrates at room temperature, providing time for positioning before the bond sets. Cold or metallic parts can accelerate setting, so bead size, assembly speed, and substrate temperature should be qualified with actual components.
Typical values include a density of approximately 0.99 g/cm³, viscosity of about 7,000 cP at 191°C, and a ball-and-ring melt point near 163°C. The recommended application-temperature range is 177°C to 196°C. Under the stated 3M test condition, temperature resistance reaches 149°C, supporting validated high-temperature industrial applications.
3M 3779Q High Temperature Hot Melt Adhesive is suited to electronics potting, wire-harness attachment, coil and component fixing, metal-to-plastic bonding in appliances, trim attachment, furniture assembly, and selected outdoor applications. Its thermoplastic behavior enables rapid, solvent-free processing without a separate curing agent. The material also has low odor and contains no added VOCs, supporting efficient production.
The Q format measures approximately 5/8 inch by 8 inches and is designed for compatible high-temperature 3M applicators. Bead dimensions can be adjusted with suitable tips for narrow lines, larger deposits, or controlled potting volumes. Because adhesion varies by plastic grade, contamination, service fluid, temperature, and joint design, testing on representative production parts is essential.
Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, moisture, and release agents. Plastic, metal, and glass may be wiped with isopropyl alcohol where compatible. Load the Q stick into an approved applicator, follow the equipment manual, and heat the adhesive within the recommended range. Apply the bead, join components within the open time, and hold them until adequate strength develops.
Molten adhesive and applicator components can cause serious burns. Use suitable protective equipment, ventilation, guarding, and workplace controls. Store unopened product in original packaging at 16°C to 27°C and 40% to 60% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight. For best performance, 3M recommends use within 24 months from manufacture.
