3M Novec 2704 Electronic Grade Coating for PCB Moisture and Corrosion Protection

Category: Brand:
3M Novec 2704 Electronic Grade Coating is a single-component fluorinated polymer coating developed for moisture, corrosion, chemical, and contamination protection of printed circuit boards and electronic components. The low-viscosity, low-surface-tension solution wets complex assemblies efficiently and can flow beneath low-standoff SMT devices, helping create an ultrathin protective film in areas that conventional coatings may struggle to reach. It dries rapidly at room temperature without post-application curing, supporting fast production, inspection, repair, and maintenance workflows.

3M Novec 2704 Electronic Grade Coating Performance

The transparent yellow-orange solution contains 4.0% fluorinated polymer in 3M Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid with less than 5% PGMEA. Typical solution properties include a density of 1.41 g/ml at 23°C, viscosity of 1.75 cP, and boiling point of 78°C. After solvent evaporation, the coating forms a transparent light-yellow to orange film with a typical thickness of approximately 0.1 to 4.0 microns, depending on the selected application method.

The dry film provides hydrophobic and oleophobic behavior, helping water, hydrocarbons, silicones, lubricating oils, and photoresist solutions bead and drain from coated surfaces. It also offers anti-wetting, anti-migration, anti-stiction, and anti-corrosion performance for electronic assemblies, displays, spindle motors, lubricated components, and precision devices. A yellow-orange dye incorporated into the polymer fluoresces under ultraviolet light, allowing production teams to confirm coating presence and coverage during quality inspection.

PCB and Electronic Component Applications

3M Novec 2704 Electronic Grade Coating is suitable for printed circuit boards, sensors, connectors, displays, miniature motors, communication equipment, automotive electronics, industrial control modules, and other assemblies requiring a thin protective barrier. The coating adheres to many metals, glass, ceramics, polymers, composites, and laminates. Its dielectric properties and low surface energy make it useful where electrical insulation, contamination control, and liquid repellency must be achieved without adding a thick or rigid encapsulation layer.

The coating can be applied by spraying, dipping, brushing, or selective dispensing. Clean and dry surfaces are essential for consistent deposition. Water must be kept out of dip tanks because contamination can interfere with coating performance. The solvent evaporates quickly, and coated parts may typically be handled in less than two minutes under suitable room-temperature conditions.

7 Commercial Benefits for Electronics Manufacturing

  • Single-component solution requiring no mixing or post-application curing.
  • Ultrathin film that adds minimal weight and dimensional change.
  • Excellent wetting beneath low-clearance SMT components.
  • Moisture, corrosion, chemical, and contamination protection.
  • UV-detectable coating for efficient quality-control inspection.
  • Solder-through repairability for practical electronic rework.
  • Flexible spray, dip, brush, and selective-dispensing application methods.

Handling, Storage, and Process Guidance

Use appropriate ventilation and personal protective equipment, especially during spray application. The coating solution should not be heated above 150°C, while the dried polymer should not be exposed above 225°C because thermal decomposition may occur. Store the unopened container between 16°C and 27°C at less than 60% relative humidity. The published shelf life is two years from the manufacturing date in the original sealed package.
