LOCTITE 498 cures when atmospheric moisture is present between close-fitting surfaces. Under standard conditions, handling strength develops quickly, while full chemical and solvent resistance continues developing for at least 24 hours. Fixture speed varies by substrate. Henkel reports approximately 20 to 30 seconds on degreased steel, 2 to 10 seconds on aluminum, 5 to 10 seconds on ABS, and 10 to 20 seconds on phenolic material at 22°C and 50% relative humidity.
The uncured adhesive has a typical viscosity of 400 to 600 mPa·s at 25°C. This medium-viscosity profile offers greater placement control than very thin capillary grades while still supporting narrow bond lines. The product performs best with a thin gap of about 0.05 mm. Larger gaps slow curing and may require a compatible activator, although Henkel notes that activator use can reduce ultimate bond strength, so production testing is recommended.
Typical uses include bonding small metal components, plastic housings, rubber parts, electrical assemblies, appliance components, automotive parts, instruments, and heat-exposed industrial devices. The adhesive is particularly useful where assembled parts experience repeated heating and cooling or humid service conditions. Its transparent appearance also supports clean-looking joints in visible assemblies.
Published 24-hour lap-shear values include approximately 19 MPa on grit-blasted steel and 10 MPa on polycarbonate and phenolic substrates under specified laboratory conditions. Henkel also reports at least 6.9 MPa on grit-blasted steel after curing, additional exposure at 121°C, and testing at 121°C. Actual performance depends on substrate grade, surface preparation, bond gap, temperature, humidity, and joint design.
Clean both bonding surfaces and remove grease, oil, dust, moisture, oxidation, and release agents. Apply a small amount to one surface, assemble immediately, and hold the components in position until fixture strength develops. Thin, close-fitting joints generally provide the fastest cure and best performance. Excess uncured adhesive may be removed with an approved LOCTITE cleanup solvent, nitromethane, or acetone where compatible with the substrate.
Store unopened containers in a dry location between 2°C and 8°C. Do not return dispensed adhesive to the original bottle because contamination can reduce product stability.
