LOCTITE 635 Retaining Compound provides high shear strength for industrial assemblies that must remain secure during mechanical service. By filling the cylindrical joint, it helps reduce micromovement, fretting, loosening, and leakage that may occur with conventional press fits or mechanical retention methods. The cured adhesive distributes loads across the bonded area instead of concentrating stress at individual contact points.
The ready-to-use formulation requires no weighing or mixing, simplifying maintenance and production processes. Its medium viscosity supports controlled dispensing around shafts, inside collars, and across fitted surfaces without running as quickly as thin retaining products. The green opaque liquid fluoresces under ultraviolet light, giving production teams a way to verify application coverage during quality inspection.
Typical applications include mounting rotors onto motor shafts, locking bushings or sleeves inside housings, securing bearings, strengthening press fits, and retaining cylindrical components in industrial equipment. It is useful in fractional and subfractional horsepower motors, pumps, machinery, gear systems, production equipment, repair operations, and other assemblies requiring maximum load transmission.
The product is designed for close-fitting metal surfaces with diametrical clearance below approximately 0.15 mm. It can be used with slip-fitted, press-fitted, and shrink-fitted assemblies when the correct application method is followed. Henkel identifies a typical fixture time of approximately six minutes, although curing speed depends on substrate activity, temperature, bond gap, and activator use.
The uncured material is based on dimethacrylate ester technology and has a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Published Brookfield viscosity is 1,500 to 2,500 mPa·s at 25°C. After curing for 24 hours at 22°C, the product provides compressive shear strength of at least 20 N/mm² on steel pins and collars under the test method.
Henkel testing also reports resistance to motor oil, brake fluid, ethanol, acetone, water-glycol mixtures, and unleaded gasoline under stated laboratory conditions. These figures are typical technical data rather than guaranteed purchase specifications. Final performance depends on surface condition, machining tolerance, adhesive quantity, assembly method, cure time, and service environment.
Clean the internal and external bonding surfaces and allow them to dry. For inactive metals or applications requiring faster curing, apply LOCTITE SF 7471 or SF 7649 Activator and allow it to evaporate. For slip fits, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar, then use a rotating motion during assembly to improve coverage.
For press fits, coat both bonding surfaces before pressing the components together. For shrink fits, apply the adhesive to the shaft, heat the collar to create assembly clearance, and fit the parts without disturbing them until handling strength develops. High-strength cured assemblies may require localized heating to approximately 250°C before disassembly.
