LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker is a green, one-component, high-strength anaerobic adhesive developed for permanent locking and sealing of threaded metal fasteners. Its low-viscosity methacrylate formula flows efficiently through closely fitted threads and cures when confined between metal surfaces without air. The completed bond helps prevent unwanted movement, loosening, leakage and corrosion caused by shock, vibration and demanding industrial service conditions.

LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker Benefits

LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker is especially effective on chromated, plated and other relatively inactive metal surfaces. It is suitable for steel, stainless steel, brass and many other metallic fasteners, making it useful for manufacturers that work with different bolt finishes and surface treatments.

The adhesive tolerates slight contamination from common industrial oils, including corrosion-prevention oils that may remain on as-received fasteners. This can simplify preparation and reduce cleaning time in suitable applications. Heavily oiled, dirty or contaminated components should still be thoroughly degreased before assembly to ensure consistent curing and maximum performance.

Its positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light supports quality-control inspection. Production teams can use compatible UV equipment to check whether the product has been applied to the required thread area. The one-component formulation also eliminates resin-to-hardener measurement, mixing errors and unnecessary preparation waste.

Applications for LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker

LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker is designed for high-strength locking of threaded fasteners that are not intended for frequent routine disassembly. Typical applications include gearbox bolts, motor assemblies, pump components, transmission fasteners, machinery housings, mounting studs, structural bolts and industrial equipment exposed to vibration.

The adhesive fills the microscopic clearances between male and female threads. After curing, it locks the fastener while also sealing the thread path against moisture, fluids and contaminants. This helps protect threaded components from fretting and corrosion while improving the reliability of mechanical fastening systems.

The product is particularly valuable for chromated or plated fasteners, where some standard anaerobic adhesives may cure more slowly. It can also be evaluated for stainless steel and aluminum assemblies. Performance should be confirmed using the actual fastener material, coating, thread geometry, tightening torque and service conditions.

LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker Technical Properties

The uncured product is a green dimethacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.08 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a Brookfield viscosity range of approximately 500 to 900 mPa·s, providing a low-viscosity profile suitable for close-fitting threaded connections.

Depending on the substrate and assembly conditions, the listed fixture-time range is approximately four to twenty-five minutes. Cure speed is influenced by metal activity, temperature, thread clearance, adhesive quantity and activator use. Passive metals and low-temperature conditions normally require more time than active metals such as plain steel or brass.

After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, published breakaway torque on M10 black-oxide steel nuts and bolts is approximately 26 to 50 N·m. Typical compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is approximately 18 to 30 N/mm². The standard continuous operating-temperature range for LOCTITE anaerobic adhesives is generally about -55°C to 150°C.

How to Apply LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker

Clean the internal and external threads and allow them to dry. For heavily contaminated components, use an appropriate LOCTITE cleaner. When passive metals, low temperatures or larger clearances cause slow curing, apply LOCTITE SF 7649 or another approved activator according to the current technical instructions.

For through-hole assemblies, apply several drops to the bolt around the nut-engagement area. For blind holes, apply several drops to the internal threads near the bottom of the hole and add material to the bolt when required. Assemble the components and tighten them to the specified torque before fixture strength develops.

For threaded sealing applications, apply a continuous 360-degree bead around the male threads while leaving the first thread free. Larger threads may require additional adhesive on the female connection. Cured high-strength assemblies may require localized heat of approximately 250°C when conventional disassembly methods are insufficient.

Why Choose LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker?

LOCTITE 2701 Threadlocker combines permanent high-strength locking, low-viscosity application, oil tolerance, UV inspection and excellent performance on chromated or passive metal fasteners. It is a dependable choice for industrial manufacturing, machinery assembly and maintenance operations where threaded joints must resist vibration, leakage and corrosion.
