LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator promotes faster cure development when an anaerobic adhesive cannot receive sufficient activation from the substrate. Anaerobic products normally cure through contact with active metal ions while isolated from air. Stainless steel, galvanized steel, plated parts and anodized aluminum may provide less natural activation than plain steel, copper, brass, bronze or iron. Applying the activator helps create more reliable curing conditions on these challenging surfaces.
The product is also valuable when production temperatures are low or joint clearances are larger than normal. Both conditions can slow the development of handling strength. By accelerating the anaerobic reaction, the activator can shorten waiting time before components proceed to the next manufacturing, inspection or maintenance stage.
LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator can be used with compatible LOCTITE threadlockers, retaining compounds, flange sealants and thread sealants. Typical applications include stainless-steel fasteners, plated bolts, anodized aluminum components, bearing housings, shafts, sleeves, pipe fittings, hydraulic connections, pump assemblies, gearboxes and industrial equipment.
It is suitable for automotive production, equipment maintenance, electric motors, fluid-processing systems, power generation, oil and gas operations, appliance manufacturing and remanufacturing. The activator does not replace the anaerobic adhesive and does not cure into an independent bond. It prepares the surface and accelerates the curing process of the subsequently applied LOCTITE product.
The February 2026 Henkel Technical Data Sheet identifies the material as a copper-salt and aliphatic-amine activator carried in acetone. It is a transparent green liquid with a typical specific gravity of 0.79 at 25°C and viscosity of approximately 2 mPa·s at 20°C. Typical drying time is 30 to 70 seconds at 20°C.
Once applied and fully dried, the activated surface has an on-part life of up to 30 days, provided it remains clean and uncontaminated. In Henkel testing with LOCTITE 326 on degreased steel using single-sided activation, fixture time was no more than 30 seconds under the stated test conditions. Actual results depend on the adhesive, substrate, clearance, temperature, application quantity and joint design.
Remove grease, oil, dust, moisture and loose contamination from the mating surfaces using a compatible LOCTITE cleaner. Spray or brush the activator onto both surfaces. For small gaps, treatment of one surface may be sufficient. Porous or contaminated materials may require additional cleaning or a second activator treatment.
Allow the acetone carrier to evaporate completely in a well-ventilated area until the surfaces are dry to the touch. Apply the selected anaerobic adhesive to one or both surfaces and assemble the parts promptly. Slight relative movement during assembly can help distribute the adhesive and maximize activation.
Never mix the liquid activator directly with the liquid anaerobic adhesive before application. The product is highly flammable and must be kept away from heat, flames, sparks, oxidizing agents and combustible materials. The solvent may affect certain plastics, paints or coatings, so compatibility testing is required before production use.
LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator provides rapid drying, simple brush or spray application, extended on-part life and dependable cure acceleration on passive metals, inactive surfaces, large gaps and low-temperature assemblies. It helps improve manufacturing consistency while supporting faster handling of threadlocked, retained and sealed components.
