LOCTITE 609 Retaining Compound is designed for close-fitting cylindrical metal parts used in electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, appliances, industrial machinery and maintenance operations. Henkel identifies rotor-to-shaft bonding in fractional and subfractional horsepower motors as a typical application. It is also used to lock bushings and sleeves into housings or onto shafts.

Additional applications include collars, locating components, bearings, pulleys and other accurately fitted metal assemblies. The product is especially suitable where a low-viscosity retaining grade is needed to penetrate a narrow joint. Its published gap-filling capability is up to approximately 0.15 mm. Worn parts or substantially larger clearances may require a higher-viscosity or metal-filled retaining compound.

The adhesive is intended primarily for metals. It is not normally recommended for thermoplastics because stress cracking may occur. Coatings, plated finishes, unusual alloys and cleaning residues can affect curing, so production testing should use the actual components and preparation process.

LOCTITE 609 Retaining Compound Technical Properties

The uncured material is a green methacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a viscosity range of approximately 110 to 140 mPa·s, confirming its low-viscosity application profile. Typical fixture time is approximately 15 minutes.

After 24 hours at 22°C, published compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 15.8 N/mm². After one hour under the same temperature condition, the reported strength is at least 10.3 N/mm². The listed operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C.

Laboratory testing also demonstrates resistance to motor oil, unleaded gasoline, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol and acetone under specified exposure conditions. These figures are typical technical values rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications. Final performance depends on metal activity, joint clearance, surface preparation, adhesive quantity, temperature and activator use.

How to Apply LOCTITE 609 Retaining Compound

Clean and degrease the internal and external bonding surfaces with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner, then allow them to dry. Shake the product thoroughly before use. If the metal is inactive or curing is too slow, apply LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator and allow it to dry.

For slip-fitted assemblies, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the male component and inside the female component. Rotate the parts during assembly to spread the liquid evenly. For press fits, apply adhesive to both mating surfaces and assemble at a high press-on rate. For shrink fits, coat the male part and heat the female component to create sufficient installation clearance.

Do not disturb the assembly until adequate handling strength develops. High-strength cured joints may require localized heating to approximately 250°C before disassembly. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
