LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive for Glass, Metal, Ceramic and Plastic Sealing

Category: Brand:
LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive is a translucent, straw-colored, one-component alkoxy silicone developed for rapid elastic bonding, gasketing, sealing and leak-proofing. Its high-viscosity, thixotropic consistency helps the material remain in place after dispensing, while ultraviolet light provides fast initial curing on exposed areas. Atmospheric moisture continues curing material hidden from direct UV exposure, creating a soft and highly flexible elastomer suitable for glass, metals, ceramics and selected plastics.

LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive Benefits

LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive combines high-speed production with dependable secondary curing. Exposed material can become dry to the touch within seconds when it receives sufficient UV energy, and functional strength develops almost immediately. This enables manufacturers to move assembled parts through handling, inspection and downstream operations without waiting for a conventional room-temperature silicone to cure completely.

The moisture-cure mechanism supports joints containing corners, edges and partially shadowed areas. Material that cannot receive direct UV light continues curing through atmospheric or surface moisture. Henkel states that moisture-cured depth is limited to approximately 6 mm and requires at least 24 hours, while the complete performance profile continues developing for approximately 72 hours under ambient conditions.

After curing, the silicone remains soft and flexible. This elastomeric behavior helps absorb shock, vibration and movement caused by differences in thermal expansion between bonded materials. The official operating-temperature range is approximately -60°C to 200°C, supporting assemblies exposed to severe cold, elevated heat and repeated temperature cycling.

Applications for LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive

LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive is suitable for elastic bonding and sealing of glass, steel, aluminum, ceramics and compatible plastics. Typical applications may include glass-to-metal covers, lighting assemblies, electronic housings, industrial enclosures, power supplies, power tools, appliance components, sensor covers and products requiring rapid sealing with a flexible bond line.

The material can also be used as a formed-in-place gasket where a thixotropic silicone bead must remain within a defined channel. Its translucent appearance is useful when the completed seal should be less visually prominent than a black or colored compound.

Because coatings, glass treatments, plastic formulations and surface finishes vary, manufacturers should test the actual production components, bond geometry, curing equipment and service environment before final approval.

LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive Technical Properties

The uncured product has a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.02 and a nonvolatile content of at least 95%. Henkel publishes a Brookfield viscosity range of approximately 50,000 to 80,000 mPa·s at 25°C. This high-viscosity profile supports controlled beads and reduces migration after application.

Representative cured properties include Shore A hardness of at least 25, tensile strength of at least 1 N/mm², elongation at break of at least 135% and tear strength of at least 1.7 N/mm. These properties provide a soft, elastic seal that can accommodate normal vibration and joint movement.

Published lap-shear ranges include approximately 0.1 to 0.5 N/mm² for aluminum-to-glass, 0.4 to 1.2 N/mm² for steel-to-glass and 0.3 to 1.0 N/mm² for glass-to-glass assemblies. These figures are typical laboratory data rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications.

How to Apply LOCTITE SI 5088 UV Silicone Adhesive

Clean all bonding surfaces and remove oil, grease, dust, moisture and loose contamination. Dispense a continuous bead or controlled quantity onto the prepared component, then assemble the parts within a few minutes because moisture curing begins after exposure to air.

Henkel recommends an initial UV cure using an irradiance of at least approximately 30 mW/cm² for about 20 seconds. Deeper sections may require additional exposure. The production process must be validated according to wavelength, lamp intensity, exposure distance, bond-line thickness and substrate light transmission.

Allow shadowed regions sufficient time to complete their secondary moisture cure. Remove uncured excess with a compatible non-polar solvent. Store unopened packaging in a cool, dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
