LOCTITE 268 High-Strength Threadlocker Stick for Bolts, Nuts, Studs and Vertical Metal Assemblies

Category: Brand:
LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick is a red, one-component, high-strength anaerobic threadlocking adhesive developed for permanently locking and sealing metal bolts, nuts and studs. Its wax-like, semi-solid stick format provides clean, controlled application without dripping, making it especially suitable for vertical, overhead and difficult-to-reach threaded assemblies. Once confined between close-fitting metal threads without air, the material cures into a durable polymer that helps prevent fastener loosening, leakage and corrosion caused by vibration, shock and repeated mechanical loading.

LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick Benefits

LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick offers the locking performance of a high-strength anaerobic adhesive in a convenient self-feeding applicator. Operators can apply the material directly onto the threaded area, helping achieve even coverage while reducing dripping, spills and product migration. The stick is easy to carry in maintenance toolkits and convenient for applications where a liquid threadlocker would be difficult to control.

The product works on active metals such as brass and copper and on passive substrates such as stainless steel, aluminum and plated surfaces. Henkel states that it can cure through most corrosion-prevention oils and cutting fluids commonly found on as-received fasteners, reducing the need for aggressive cleaning in suitable production and maintenance applications.

Its high torque strength makes it appropriate for threaded joints that are not intended for frequent routine disassembly. Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light also enables quality-control teams to verify adhesive presence and application coverage with suitable UV inspection equipment.

Applications for LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick

LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick is designed for permanently locking metal fasteners used in pumps, gearboxes, presses, motors, compressors, conveyors, industrial machinery and heavy equipment. Typical applications include gearbox housing bolts, pump fasteners, mounting studs, equipment-frame bolts, structural threaded connections and assemblies exposed to continuous vibration.

The non-drip consistency is particularly useful for bolts positioned vertically, fasteners installed overhead and maintenance work performed in confined areas. It can be applied before assembly without flowing away from the required thread-engagement zone.

The product is intended primarily for metallic threaded assemblies. Henkel does not normally recommend anaerobic products for thermoplastics because stress cracking may occur. Compatibility should therefore be tested before use on plastics, painted surfaces, unusual coatings or sensitive materials.

LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick Technical Properties

The uncured product is a red dimethacrylate-ester material supplied in a wax-like semi-solid stick. It has a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.03 at 25°C, an unworked penetration range of approximately 90 to 150 according to ISO 2137 and a melting point above 65°C.

Henkel lists a typical fixture time of approximately five minutes under representative conditions. After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, published breakaway torque is approximately 10 N·m on selected steel fasteners. Breakloose torque can vary according to the fastener material, surface finish, thread dimensions, pre-torque and curing conditions.

The listed service-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C. Laboratory testing also demonstrates resistance to motor oil, gasoline, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol, acetone, biodiesel, diesel exhaust fluid and selected industrial chemicals under specified exposure conditions.

How to Apply LOCTITE 268 Threadlocker Stick

For the most consistent results, clean the internal and external threads with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. Advance only the amount of stick required for the immediate application and remove any surface skin that may have formed.

Rub sufficient material directly onto the bolt threads where the nut or threaded hole will engage. Ensure the thread profile is evenly coated, then assemble and tighten the fastener to the required torque. Replace the cap immediately after use to protect the remaining material.

Where passive metals, low temperatures or large thread clearances produce an unacceptable curing time, LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator may be evaluated. Activators can affect final strength, so testing under actual production conditions is recommended.

Because the cured product provides high-strength retention, standard hand tools may not be sufficient for large fasteners or long thread engagement. Apply localized heat to approximately 250°C and disassemble the joint while hot when necessary. Cured residue can be removed using a compatible solvent and mechanical abrasion.
