LOCTITE 545 Thread Sealant is specially formulated to provide high lubricity during assembly. This reduces thread friction and helps hydraulic and pneumatic fittings engage smoothly while operators apply the required tightening torque. The lubricating effect is particularly valuable for fine-threaded fittings that require controlled installation without galling or excessive resistance.
The formulation contains no fillers or solid particles that could separate from the sealant and contaminate system fluids. This helps reduce the risk of fouling valves or blocking fine filters, screens and narrow fluid passages. It is therefore a practical choice for precision fluid-power systems where internal cleanliness is important.
The one-component format requires no mixing, reducing preparation time, ratio errors and material waste. Once cured, the sealant helps prevent leakage and loosening caused by pressure, shock and vibration. Properly tightened fittings provide an immediate seal against moderate pressures, while full pressure and solvent resistance develops after adequate curing.
LOCTITE 545 Thread Sealant is recommended for fine-threaded hydraulic and pneumatic fittings used in industrial machinery, automotive equipment, fluid-power systems, processing equipment and maintenance operations. Typical applications include hydraulic connectors, pneumatic couplings, pressure fittings, valves, pumps, compressors and metal pipe connections.
The product is intended for compatible metal threads and can be used on active or passive metallic substrates after appropriate surface preparation. Stainless steel, aluminum and passive metallic substrates after plated fittings may cure more slowly than active metals. LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator can be used when faster curing is required because of passive surfaces or temperatures below approximately 5°C.
The product is not normally recommended for thermoplastic components because some plastics may experience stress cracking. Users should verify compatibility before applying the sealant to plastic fittings, coated parts or unusual substrate materials.
LOCTITE 545 Thread Sealant is based on methacrylate-ester acrylic technology and cures through an anaerobic reaction. The uncured material is a purple liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.02 at 25°C. Its published Brookfield viscosity range is approximately 9,000 to 20,000 mPa·s, providing controlled application on fine threads.
After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, published breakaway torque on M10 steel nuts and bolts is approximately 2 N·m. This relatively low removal torque supports disassembly with standard hand tools during maintenance. The listed continuous operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C.
Laboratory testing demonstrates resistance to motor oil, unleaded gasoline, brake fluid, ethanol, acetone, water-glycol mixtures, biodiesel and diesel exhaust fluid under specified conditions. These figures are typical technical values rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications.
Clean the male and female threads with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. Apply a continuous 360-degree bead starting one or two threads back from the leading edge and cover approximately three thread roots. Work the sealant into the thread profile so the voids are filled completely.
For larger threads or clearances, increase the amount and apply sealant to both the male and female threads when necessary. Assemble the fitting and wrench-tighten it according to the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. Allow at least 24 hours of curing before exposing the connection to maximum pressure or demanding solvents.
Most cured fittings can be dismantled with standard hand tools. Large-diameter connections or assemblies with excessive thread engagement may require localized heating before disassembly. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
LOCTITE 545 Thread Sealant combines high assembly lubricity, clean particle-free formulation, chemical resistance and reliable sealing of fine-threaded metal fittings. It is a professional solution for hydraulic and pneumatic systems requiring smooth installation, dependable leak prevention and easy maintenance disassembly.
