The adhesive cures when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces and isolated from air. Once cured, it fills microscopic gaps throughout the cylindrical joint, creating a unitized assembly that helps distribute load more evenly than mechanical contact alone. This process supports higher torque transmission while reducing loosening, leakage, fretting, and movement caused by operational shock or vibration.
LOCTITE 121078 High Strength Retaining Compound is suitable for diametrical clearances below 0.25 mm. It provides a typical fixture time of approximately three minutes and a service-temperature range from -55°C to 175°C. Published viscosity is approximately 3,000 to 5,000 mPa·s at 25°C under the specified Brookfield test condition. After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, its compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 20 MPa under the referenced ISO test.
Typical applications include retaining gears and sprockets on gearbox shafts, securing rotors on electric motor shafts, installing sleeves and bushes, and strengthening compatible bearing or cylindrical fitting assemblies. The thixotropic consistency is useful on vertical surfaces and during controlled dispensing because it reduces unwanted run-off after application. Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light also helps production teams verify adhesive presence during quality inspection.
This retaining compound can be used with slip fits, press fits, and shrink-fitted assemblies. For slip fits, the adhesive is applied around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar before the components are joined with a rotating motion. For press fits, both surfaces should be coated before assembly. For shrink fits, the adhesive is applied to the shaft before the heated collar is installed.
Clean all internal and external metal surfaces with a suitable LOCTITE cleaning solvent and allow them to dry completely. Apply enough product to achieve continuous coverage, assemble the components promptly, and avoid disturbing the joint until sufficient handling strength develops. Passive metals, low temperatures, or larger clearances may require a compatible activator after process validation.
Because this is a high-strength permanent-grade product, disassembly may require localized heating to approximately 250°C followed by separation while the assembly remains hot. Store unopened containers in a dry location, generally between 2°C and 21°C; Henkel specifies 2°C to 8°C for the 1-liter package. Always review the current technical data sheet and safety data sheet before production use.
