3M identifies Adhesive 1099 as a light-tan, medium-viscosity grade intended mainly for brush or flow application. Typical uncured properties include a nitrile-rubber base, acetone carrier, solids content of approximately 31% to 37% by weight, density of 0.87 to 0.90 kg/L, and viscosity of about 2,000 to 4,000 cP at 27°C. The adhesive dries rapidly at room temperature and provides a bonding range of up to approximately 40 minutes under reference conditions.

The air-dried product develops a strong flexible bond without mandatory oven curing. For applications requiring higher physical performance, the assembled joint can be heat cured through a validated temperature-and-time cycle. This gives manufacturers a choice between convenient room-temperature contact bonding and enhanced thermally cured performance.

3M 1099 Nitrile High Performance Plastic Adhesive is particularly suitable for vinyl extrusions and sheeting where resistance to plasticizer migration is important. Typical uses include automotive interior panels, upholstery, flexible vinyl trim, protective covers, banners, awnings, packaging components, appliance parts, coated fabrics, foam laminates, and plastic-to-metal assemblies. It may also be evaluated for leather, rubber, phenolic components, ABS parts, fabrics, and flexible plastics.

The adhesive is not recommended for untreated polyolefin plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene. It may stain thin or light-colored vinyl, so appearance and compatibility testing should be completed before production. Performance varies with plastic grade, plasticizer package, coating, ink, foam, fabric, metal finish, temperature, and environmental exposure.

Applying 3M 1099 Nitrile High Performance Plastic Adhesive

Remove dust, dirt, oil, grease, wax, moisture, loose paint, and other contamination from both surfaces. For best results, the adhesive and substrates should be at least 18°C. Stir the product thoroughly and apply a thin, uniform coating. Porous materials may require more than one coat, while coating both surfaces generally provides greater strength and a longer joining window.

For nonporous materials, apply adhesive to both surfaces and allow it to dry until aggressively tacky without transferring to a lightly touched finger. Align the components carefully, join them within the available bonding range, and apply firm, even pressure with a roller, press, or fixture to ensure complete contact.

Heat Reactivation and Cure Options

Dried adhesive can be heat reactivated by warming one or both coated surfaces to at least approximately 82°C and assembling them immediately while hot. For superior properties, 3M lists minimum cure schedules including 120 minutes at 93°C, 40 minutes at 116°C, 12 minutes at 138°C, eight minutes at 160°C, five minutes at 182°C, or two minutes at 204°C. The bond line must reach the required temperature while suitable pressure is maintained.

The selected thermal cycle must be compatible with the joined vinyl, foam, plastic, coating, and fabric. Confirm bond strength, peel resistance, flexibility, temperature performance, water exposure, fuel contact, aging, and appearance on representative finished assemblies.

Storage, Safety, and Official Product Resources

Store the unopened product in its original packaging between approximately 16°C and 27°C, at 40% to 60% relative humidity, and away from direct sunlight. 3M lists a shelf life of 24 months from manufacture under these conditions. Keep the container tightly closed to limit solvent loss and viscosity increase.

The acetone-based adhesive is highly flammable and intended for trained industrial or occupational users. Provide suitable ventilation, eliminate flames, sparks, pilot lights, and other ignition sources, and use appropriate protective equipment.
