3M 2214 Regular Epoxy Adhesive is a one-part, heat-curing structural adhesive developed for high-strength bonding of metals, glass, coated surfaces, and many heat-resistant plastics. Officially marketed as 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive 2214 Regular, this gray, aluminum-filled modified epoxy combines a toughened paste consistency with excellent shear strength, elevated-temperature performance, aging resistance, and controlled non-sag application. It is suitable for transportation, general aerospace, construction, specialty vehicles, appliances, industrial machinery, and metal fabrication.

The adhesive is supplied as a ready-to-use single component, eliminating resin-and-hardener weighing, metering, and mixing. It remains available for adjustment and rework until sufficient heat is applied, which is valuable for accurately aligned components and assemblies that require inspection before cure. Under the current 3M reference condition, full cure is achieved in approximately 40 minutes at 121°C.

3M lists the uncured product as a gray thixotropic paste with a modified epoxy base, 100% solids, density of approximately 1.44 g/cm³, and Brookfield viscosity above 1,000,000 cP. The non-sag consistency helps the material remain on vertical, curved, overhead, and irregular surfaces. It can be applied with a spatula, trowel, or qualified flow-dispensing equipment.

3M 2214 Regular Epoxy Adhesive is designed primarily for bonding metals when useful strength must be maintained at elevated temperatures. It can also bond many high-temperature plastics, including fiberglass-reinforced plastic, polyester, and phenolic materials, together with compatible glass and coated surfaces. Typical applications include metal brackets, equipment housings, vehicle components, appliance parts, structural panels, industrial fixtures, and composite reinforcements.

The official service-temperature guidance covers approximately -53°C to 121°C. This range supports assemblies exposed to winter conditions, heated machinery, transport environments, and repeated temperature cycling. Final suitability depends on the substrate, surface finish, joint geometry, cure profile, loading direction, chemicals, and duration at temperature.

Typical cured properties include Shore D hardness of approximately 85, tensile strength at break of about 69 MPa, and modulus near 5,170 MPa. In 3M laboratory testing on prepared cold-rolled steel, the adhesive produced overlap shear strength of approximately 17.2 MPa at 23°C. Published T-peel values include approximately 88 N/cm on solvent-wiped steel and 9 N/cm on prepared aluminum under the stated test methods.

These figures are representative laboratory results rather than guaranteed specifications. Users should test completed assemblies under expected static loading, peel stress, vibration, humidity, chemicals, thermal cycling, and long-term temperature exposure. Joint designs that maximize overlap and reduce peel or cleavage loading generally provide better structural performance.

Applying 3M 2214 Regular Epoxy Adhesive

Store the unopened adhesive under refrigerated conditions and allow it to warm to room temperature before opening. This restores suitable application consistency and helps prevent moisture condensation. 3M states that containers may require one to two days at room temperature to thaw and should not be warmed above 27°C.

Remove dust, oil, grease, moisture, corrosion, release agents, and loose contamination. For coated metals and plastics, clean the surface, lightly abrade it, and clean it again. Aluminum and stainless steel may be cleaned with acetone, abraded, and cleaned again. For glass, a compatible silane adhesion promoter may improve adhesion after cleaning.

Apply a uniform layer with a spatula, trowel, or validated dispensing system. Assemble the parts, control the bond-line thickness, and maintain alignment and pressure during heat curing. Confirm that the adhesive bond line—not only the oven air—reaches the specified temperature for the required time.

Storage, Safety, and Official 3M Resources

For maximum storage life, 3M recommends storage at 4°C or below. The current technical data sheet lists 12 months of shelf life from manufacture in unopened containers at 4°C or below, or 18 months at -20°C or below. The product meets UL 94 HB and is intended for trained industrial or occupational users.
