Published product information lists a normal boiling point of approximately 76°C and a freezing point near -138°C, providing a broad liquid operating range for specialized process equipment. Typical properties at room temperature include a density of about 1.43 g/ml, viscosity near 0.61 cP, surface tension of approximately 13.6 dynes/cm, and vapor pressure around 109 mmHg at 25°C. These characteristics support fast wetting, circulation, evaporation, and access to small spaces around electronic and precision mechanical assemblies.
The fluid is electrically insulating and has been evaluated for heat-transfer and direct-contact cooling systems designed for compatible components. Published data lists dielectric strength above 25 kV under the referenced test condition. Its chemical and thermal stability can also support vapor cleaning, cold cleaning, specialty solvent use, extraction, reaction media, and controlled thermal-management processes. System performance depends on equipment design, temperature, pressure, flow rate, heat load, fluid cleanliness, and compatible construction materials.
Typical cleaning applications include removing light oils, fluorinated lubricants, particles, fingerprints, and selected process contamination from electronic assemblies, optical parts, connectors, metal components, plastic parts, and precision devices. It may be used neat for light-duty cleaning, as a rinse agent in vapor-degreasing equipment, or as a carrier for lubricants and specialty coatings. Because solvent power varies by contaminant, users should complete controlled trials using actual soils, substrates, and cleaning equipment.
Short-term compatibility testing published by 3M showed useful performance with aluminum, copper, carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, acrylic, polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polyester, epoxy, PET, phenolic resin, ABS, butyl rubber, natural rubber, nitrile rubber, and EPDM. Longer exposure may affect some fluorinated plastics or elastomers, and some silicone rubber or PTFE materials may swell. Seal selection, extraction testing, dimensional checks, and aging studies are therefore essential.
Use the fluid only in industrial equipment designed for volatile fluorinated solvents. Keep tanks, lines, seals, condensers, and recovery systems clean and compatible. For vapor degreasing, control heat input, vapor height, cooling capacity, freeboard conditions, drag-out, and ventilation. For wipe or immersion cleaning, use clean tools and covered containers to reduce evaporation and contamination. For thermal systems, validate pumping, pressure relief, leak detection, condenser capacity, electrical clearances, and fluid recovery.
Read the current safety data sheet before use. Provide suitable ventilation and follow local exposure-control, storage, waste, transport, and environmental requirements. Prevent unnecessary emissions and recover fluid whenever practical. Although historical product literature describes low toxicity and an occupational exposure guideline of 200 ppm, workplace controls should be based on the current regional SDS and applicable regulations.
Review the official 3M Novec 7200 regulatory data sheet and the official 3M Novec 7200 safety data sheet for handling, composition, regulatory, and safety information.
3M completed its exit from PFAS manufacturing at the end of 2025. As a fluorinated engineered fluid, Novec 7200 may now be available only through remaining inventory, transitional sales, or regional distributors. Buyers should confirm stock, original packaging, manufacturing date, batch traceability, documentation, and local regulatory status before ordering.
