DOWSIL 3-1944 RTV Coating is supplied as a ready-to-use, one-part material that cures through exposure to atmospheric moisture. Its translucent appearance helps preserve visibility of components and board features, while the built-in ultraviolet indicator supports manual or automated inspection of coating presence. The product forms a soft, resilient elastomer rather than a rigid shell, helping reduce mechanical stress around solder joints, delicate leads, and components exposed to vibration or thermal movement.
Dow lists a typical viscosity of approximately 63,775 mPa·s, commonly rounded to 64,000 cP, and a cured hardness of approximately 36 Shore A. This high-viscosity profile supports controlled needle dispensing and helps limit unwanted flow into connectors, test points, switches, and other keep-out zones. It can also provide thicker one-pass coverage around taller components, board edges, and wire bonds where lower-viscosity coatings may spread too far.
The coating is intended for environmental protection, corrosion resistance, dielectric protection, and thin-section encapsulation. Typical uses include printed circuit boards, electronic assemblies, battery-management modules, power electronics, sensor boards, communication devices, industrial controllers, lighting assemblies, and connector areas. The cured silicone barrier helps reduce exposure to humidity, condensation, airborne contamination, ionic residue, and corrosive conditions while maintaining flexibility around electronic structures.
Dow reports a tack-free time of approximately 14 minutes at 50% relative humidity under reference conditions. Cure rate depends on ambient temperature, humidity, coating thickness, geometry, airflow, and the amount of material exposed to moisture. Room-temperature curing avoids a mandatory production oven, while controlled mild heat may accelerate processing after the application has been qualified for the actual board design.
Dow’s electronics materials guide lists typical cured dielectric strength of approximately 21 kV/mm, volume resistivity of about 1.6 × 1015 Ω·cm, dielectric constant of approximately 2.73 at 100 kHz, and dielectric tangent below 2 × 10-4 at 100 kHz. Final suitability depends on coating thickness, voltage spacing, board cleanliness, cure condition, temperature, humidity, and the operating environment of the completed assembly.
The product is associated with UL 94 V-0 flammability performance, UL 746C and UL 746E recognition, IPC-CC-830 qualification, and MIL-I-46058C recognition. Manufacturers should confirm the current approval file, applicable thickness, product grade, and regional documentation before using a certification statement in a finished-product specification.
Ensure the printed circuit assembly is clean, dry, and free from oil, dust, moisture, fingerprints, flux residue, release agents, and other contamination. Mask connectors, switches, test points, grounding contacts, adjustable parts, and surfaces that must remain uncoated. Dispense a controlled bead or film with compatible needle equipment, allowing the material to cover required edges and component areas without trapping large air pockets.
Allow sufficient access to atmospheric moisture during curing. Very thick sections and enclosed areas cure more slowly because moisture enters from the exposed surface inward. Before volume production, verify adhesion, tack-free time, complete cure, coating thickness, UV inspection response, dielectric performance, thermal cycling, vibration resistance, humidity exposure, and rework procedures on representative assemblies.
Keep the original container tightly closed and protect the product from premature moisture exposure and contamination. Follow the storage temperature and use-before date shown on the current package label and technical documentation. Review the safety data sheet before handling and use appropriate ventilation, gloves, eye protection, and industrial processing controls.
