Loctite 242 is a medium-strength threadlocker designed to secure threaded metal assemblies against loosening due to vibration. It is suitable for use on a wide range of metal threads, including stainless steel and plated surfaces, and performs exceptionally well even in slightly contaminated conditions (such as those with oils, cutting fluids, and lubricants).
LOCTITE 242 Threadlocker provides dependable medium-strength locking for general industrial fastening applications. Unlike mechanical lock washers and other traditional locking devices, the liquid adhesive fills the entire space between the male and female threads. This creates more uniform load distribution while helping protect the connection from moisture and contamination.
The one-component formulation requires no mixing, reducing preparation time and application errors. Its thixotropic consistency minimizes dripping and migration after dispensing, allowing operators to place the adhesive accurately on bolts, studs and threaded fittings. Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light also supports production inspection and adhesive-coverage verification.
Once cured, the fastener normally remains removable with standard hand tools. This makes the product suitable for equipment that requires periodic servicing, adjustment or component replacement without the permanent retention associated with high-strength threadlockers.
LOCTITE 242 Threadlocker is suitable for metal fasteners up to approximately M36. Typical applications include electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, machine tools, compressors, conveyors, industrial equipment, automotive components and general maintenance assemblies.
Common uses include securing housing bolts, bearing-cover fasteners, mounting screws, gearbox bolts, pump fasteners, equipment-frame bolts and threaded components exposed to vibration. It can be used on steel, stainless steel, brass and selected plated metal surfaces after suitable preparation.
The product is especially useful where medium locking strength is required together with normal maintenance disassembly. Passive metals, plated surfaces, low temperatures and larger thread clearances may slow the anaerobic curing process. In these conditions, LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator can be evaluated.
The uncured product is a blue dimethacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a Brookfield viscosity range of approximately 800 to 1,600 mPa·s at 25°C, confirming its medium-viscosity, thixotropic processing profile.
The current official product information lists a fixture-time range of approximately 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the metal substrate and assembly conditions. After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, published breakaway torque on M10 black-oxide steel nuts and bolts is approximately 8 to 19 N·m.
Laboratory testing also demonstrates resistance to motor oil, gasoline, brake fluid, ethanol, acetone and water-glycol mixtures under specified exposure conditions. These figures are typical technical references rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications. Actual performance depends on metal activity, thread clearance, surface cleanliness, temperature, tightening torque and curing time.
Clean the internal and external threads and remove oil, grease, dust, moisture and loose contamination. Allow the parts to dry completely. Shake the container before use and avoid touching the dispensing nozzle directly against metal surfaces.
For through-hole assemblies, apply several drops around the bolt where the nut will engage. For blind holes, dispense the adhesive into the lower internal threads so displaced air does not force the product out during assembly. Install and tighten the fastener to the specified torque before fixture strength develops.
For threaded sealing applications, apply a continuous 360-degree bead around the male threads while leaving the first thread free. Larger threads may require additional material on the female connection. Remove cured residue using a suitable solvent together with mechanical abrasion.
LOCTITE 242 Threadlocker combines medium-strength locking, controlled application, fast fixture development, chemical resistance and convenient maintenance disassembly. It is a practical general-purpose solution for manufacturers and maintenance teams seeking reliable protection against fastener loosening, leakage and corrosion.
Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C. Review the official Henkel LOCTITE 242 Technical Data Sheet and current Safety Data Sheet before qualification or production use. Explore our medium-strength threadlockers for additional removable fastener-locking solutions.
