Under Henkel’s stated test conditions, typical fixture times include 5 to 15 seconds on aluminum, 10 to 30 seconds on mild steel and ABS, 3 to 10 seconds on PVC, and less than five seconds on neoprene and nitrile rubber. Polycarbonate typically fixtures within 20 to 60 seconds. Actual curing speed depends on the substrate, joint clearance, ambient humidity, temperature, and adhesive quantity.
After 24 hours at room temperature, typical lap-shear strength reaches 15 to 26 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel, 12 to 19 N/mm² on grit-blasted aluminum, and 6 to 20 N/mm² on several compatible plastics. The cured adhesive also offers useful electrical insulation, with a typical dielectric breakdown strength of approximately 25 kV/mm and high volume resistivity. Assemble and accurately position the parts immediately because the short fixture time leaves limited opportunity for adjustment. Hold or clamp the joint until the adhesive fixtures. When curing is too slow because of surface conditions or joint geometry, LOCTITE SF 7452 or SF 7455 Activator may be considered, although an activator can reduce ultimate bond strength and should therefore be tested before production approval.
Store unopened LOCTITE 420 Instant Adhesive in a dry location at the recommended temperature of 2°C to 8°C. Prevent contamination and never return dispensed adhesive to its original bottle. Cyanoacrylate bonds skin and eyes rapidly, so operators should use appropriate ventilation, eye protection, and suitable handling procedures while following the current safety data sheet.
