LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive for Fast Structural Bonding

LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive is a two-component structural bonding product developed for strong and durable assembly of metals, composites, plastics, and other compatible industrial materials. Its hybrid chemistry combines cyanoacrylate and acrylic technologies, providing faster fixture than many traditional structural adhesives while retaining useful peel, impact, and shear resistance. The adhesive develops high operational strength within the first hour and performs across relatively large joint gaps.

Part A is a clear to slightly hazy cyanoacrylate, while Part B is a white to off-white methacrylate paste. The two components are mixed at a convenient 1:1 ratio by volume, producing an opaque to slightly yellow adhesive. Its high-viscosity, thixotropic consistency supports controlled bead application and helps the material remain in place on vertical surfaces, irregular components, and joints requiring gap filling.

Key Benefits of LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive

LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive offers approximately ten minutes of open time at 25°C, giving operators sufficient time to dispense, position, and align components. Typical fixture time is about ten minutes on grit-blasted steel and aluminum with a 0.05 mm gap. Even with a 2 mm aluminum joint gap, published fixture time is approximately 12 minutes.

Henkel lists gap-filling capability up to approximately 5 mm. This makes the product suitable for rough, uneven, or poorly fitting components where conventional instant adhesives may not provide sufficient gap tolerance. Its high viscosity also helps prevent excessive dripping and migration during manual or automated dispensing.

After curing for one week at 22°C, the adhesive has a typical Shore D hardness of 72, tensile strength of approximately 11.3 N/mm², tensile modulus of around 355 N/mm², and elongation at break of about 80%. This balance creates a tough bond capable of absorbing impact and deformation more effectively than a highly brittle structural adhesive.

Strength of LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive

LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive provides typical lap-shear strength of approximately 25.6 N/mm² on grit-blasted mild steel, 20.4 N/mm² on etched aluminum, and 17.2 N/mm² on zinc-dichromate surfaces. Published results also include approximately 11.5 N/mm² on PVC, 10 N/mm² on epoxy composites, 7.3 N/mm² on oak, and 6.7 N/mm² on PMMA.

Its typical T-peel strength is approximately 7 N/mm on grit-blasted steel and 5 N/mm on grit-blasted aluminum. The adhesive also provides an impact strength of around 4.1 kJ/m² under the manufacturer’s specified test conditions. These values indicate suitability for components exposed to vibration, impact, peeling forces, temperature changes, and normal industrial handling.

Applications for LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive

LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive can be used for industrial housings, brackets, frames, panels, composite structures, appliance components, equipment covers, plastic assemblies, metal fittings, and mixed-material structures. It is particularly valuable where manufacturers require faster processing than conventional epoxies but need greater impact resistance and gap filling than ordinary instant adhesives.

Compatible substrates include steel, aluminum, zinc-treated metal, ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, PMMA, phenolic materials, epoxy composites, wood, and selected elastomers. Actual performance depends on substrate grade, coating, surface preparation, joint geometry, adhesive thickness, curing temperature, and environmental exposure.

How to Apply LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive

Clean both surfaces and remove oil, grease, dust, moisture, oxide, paint, and release agents. Insert the dual cartridge into a compatible applicator, confirm that both components flow evenly, and attach the supplied static mixing nozzle. Dispense and discard an initial bead approximately as long and wide as the nozzle to ensure correct mixing.

Apply the mixed adhesive to one surface, assemble the components immediately, and hold or clamp the joint until fixture strength develops. Prevent movement during curing and allow approximately 24 hours before applying significant service loads.

Storage of LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive

Store unopened 50 mL and 400 mL cartridges in a dry location between approximately 2°C and 21°C. Do not return dispensed material to the original cartridge. The adhesive is not recommended for pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, chlorine, or other strong oxidizing materials.

For manufacturers requiring fast fixture, broad substrate compatibility, impact resistance, and structural gap filling, LOCTITE HY 4080 Hybrid Adhesive provides an effective solution for demanding multi-material assembly.
