Henkel LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive for Medical Device and Cosmetic Assembly

Category: Brand:
LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive is a one-component, low-viscosity cyanoacrylate developed for rapid bonding where odor, vapor control, and visible white blooming are important concerns. The ultra-clear adhesive quickly joins close-fitting metals, plastics, elastomers, wood, paper, leather, fabric, and other compatible materials. Its clean appearance and reduced odor make it suitable for medical-device assembly, consumer electronics, cosmetic components, instruments, appliances, electric motors, plastic housings, rubber parts, decorative products, and precision industrial manufacturing.

LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive Performance

LOCTITE 460 is based on alkoxyethyl cyanoacrylate technology and cures through moisture naturally present on the bonding surfaces and in the surrounding atmosphere. It requires no measuring, mixing, heating, or separate hardener. Once the adhesive is confined between closely fitted parts, polymerization begins and handling strength develops within seconds on many compatible substrates.

Henkel lists a typical viscosity of approximately 40 mPa·s, with the official technical data range covering about 25 to 55 mPa·s under the specified test method. This low viscosity helps the adhesive spread across narrow interfaces and penetrate small surface irregularities. The maximum published gap fill is approximately 0.12 mm, although thinner and closely fitted joints normally produce faster curing and stronger, more repeatable results.

LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive Applications

The product is designed for bonding metals, plastics, and elastomers. It is particularly suitable for porous and absorbent materials such as wood, paper, leather, and fabric, where some standard instant adhesives may cure less consistently. Typical uses include plastic housing assembly, rubber seal attachment, nameplates, appliance components, instrument parts, motor assemblies, decorative products, electronic devices, packaging components, and visible consumer products.

The official Henkel product page also positions LOCTITE 460 for medical-device assembly. Manufacturers must qualify the complete device according to its intended biological contact, sterilization process, production method, regulatory market, and risk-management requirements. Product selection alone does not establish compliance or suitability for a finished medical device.

Difficult low-surface-energy plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and PTFE may be bonded when used with a suitable surface primer such as LOCTITE SF 770. Because plastic grades, additives, molded surfaces, coatings, and residual release agents vary, adhesion and appearance should be tested on representative production components before commercial use.

7 Benefits of LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive

  • Low odor: Improves operator comfort where adhesive-vapor control is difficult.
  • Low blooming: Helps reduce visible white residue around the finished bond line.
  • Ultra-clear appearance: Supports cosmetic, decorative, medical, and visible assemblies.
  • Rapid fixture: Develops handling strength within seconds on many compatible materials.
  • Low viscosity: Flows efficiently through narrow gaps and close-fitting joints.
  • Broad material range: Bonds metals, plastics, rubbers, wood, paper, leather, and fabric.
  • One-component processing: Eliminates mixing ratios, curing ovens, and separate hardeners.

LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive Fixture Times

Fixture speed depends on the substrate, bond gap, humidity, and ambient temperature. At approximately 22°C and 50% relative humidity, Henkel reports fixture times of 10 to 30 seconds on steel, 5 to 10 seconds on aluminum, less than 5 seconds on neoprene and nitrile rubber, less than 5 seconds on ABS, 5 to 30 seconds on PVC, and 10 to 20 seconds on polycarbonate.

Porous materials also cure rapidly, with reference fixture times of approximately 20 to 30 seconds on pine wood, 1 to 10 seconds on leather, and less than 5 seconds on paper. The recommended workplace relative humidity is approximately 40% to 60% at 22°C. Lower humidity slows curing, while very high humidity may accelerate fixture but can reduce final bond strength.

Strength and Temperature Performance

After 72 hours of curing at 22°C, the published lap-shear strength is approximately 21 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel and 18 N/mm² on etched aluminum. Reference values also include approximately 7.9 N/mm² on ABS and 7.7 N/mm² on polycarbonate. Steel pin-to-pin tensile strength reaches approximately 30 N/mm² after 24 hours under the specified test conditions.

The current Henkel product page lists a recommended operating-temperature range of approximately -40°C to 80°C. Actual performance depends on joint geometry, surface preparation, loading direction, environmental exposure, chemical contact, and time at temperature. Production testing should include the complete bonded assembly rather than relying only on laboratory substrate values.

Applying LOCTITE 460 Low-Odor Instant Adhesive

Clean both surfaces and remove grease, oil, dust, moisture, oxidation, mold-release agents, and loose contamination. Apply a small quantity to one bonding surface. Do not use tissue or a brush to spread the adhesive because cyanoacrylates can react rapidly with absorbent materials and generate heat.

Join the parts within a few seconds and maintain accurate alignment until the adhesive reaches fixture strength. Excessive adhesive can slow curing and reduce performance, so use only enough material to wet the bonding area. When an activator is required for a larger gap or inactive substrate, apply it according to Henkel guidance and verify the effect because activators may reduce ultimate strength.

Although functional strength develops rapidly, allow approximately 24 to 72 hours before exposing the assembly to full service loads. Complete chemical and solvent resistance requires at least 24 hours of curing under suitable conditions.

Storage, Packaging, and Official Product Resources

Store unopened containers in a dry location between 2°C and 8°C. Keep the bottle tightly closed, protect it from moisture and contamination, and do not return dispensed adhesive to the original package. Allow refrigerated material to reach an appropriate dispensing temperature while the container remains sealed to minimize condensation.

The official Henkel Taiwan product listing identifies a 20 g bottle under IDH 271857. Regional package sizes and availability may differ.
