LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound is a green, one-component anaerobic adhesive developed for high-strength retention of cylindrical metal parts. Its low-viscosity formula flows efficiently into close-fitting and slip-fitted assemblies, filling microscopic clearances between shafts, bearings, bushings, sleeves, collars and housings. When confined between metal surfaces without air, it cures into a durable thermoset bond that helps prevent loosening and leakage caused by shock, vibration and repeated mechanical loading.

LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound Benefits

LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound provides high-strength bonding without requiring resin-to-hardener mixing. Its ready-to-use format simplifies manual maintenance and automated dispensing while reducing preparation errors and material waste. The low-viscosity liquid wets narrow cylindrical joints effectively and distributes stress across the complete bonded surface.

The product provides robust curing on active metals such as mild steel and passive substrates such as stainless steel and plated surfaces. It also tolerates minor contamination from cutting oil, lubricating fluid, corrosion-prevention oil and protective fluid. Although proper cleaning remains recommended for maximum consistency, this oil tolerance supports reliable assembly under practical manufacturing conditions.

Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light allows production teams to inspect adhesive presence and application coverage. This quality-control feature is useful on high-volume assembly lines where correct dispensing must be verified before components proceed to the next manufacturing stage.

Applications for LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound

LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound is ideal for retaining bearings, bushings, sleeves, collars, gears, pulleys, rotors and other cylindrical parts. It is particularly suitable for slip-fitted components that require low-viscosity wetting and permanent high-strength retention.

Typical industries include electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, industrial machinery, automotive systems, power tools, fluid-handling equipment and general maintenance. By filling the clearance between fitted parts, the adhesive can improve torque transmission, reduce fretting and help protect the joint against corrosion.

The product can be used for slip-fitted, press-fitted and shrink-fitted assemblies. Regional versions may also carry NSF/ANSI 61 certification for potable-water systems operating at temperatures not exceeding 82°C. Buyers should confirm that the certification applies to the specific regional product and packaging supplied.

LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound Technical Properties

The uncured adhesive is a green methacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Published Brookfield viscosity is approximately 750 to 1,750 mPa·s, while cone-and-plate viscosity is approximately 650 to 1,850 mPa·s.

Henkel lists a typical fixture time of approximately four minutes and a full curing time of approximately 24 hours at 22°C. After seven days of curing, published compressive shear strength is approximately 26 N/mm² on steel pins and collars, 28 N/mm² on stainless steel and 16 N/mm² on aluminum.

Curing speed depends on the metal, bond clearance, temperature and activator use. Passive substrates, larger gaps and low-temperature conditions generally cure more slowly. LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator may be used when faster curing is required or when the assembly temperature is below approximately 5°C.

How to Apply LOCTITE 680 Retaining Compound

Clean the internal and external bonding surfaces with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. For slip-fitted assemblies, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar. Use a rotating motion during assembly to distribute the adhesive evenly and remove excess material.

For press fits, apply a continuous bead to both mating surfaces and assemble the parts at a high press-on rate. For shrink fits, apply an even coating to the appropriate component, heat the female part to create sufficient clearance and complete the assembly before the parts return to equal temperature.

Do not disturb the assembly until adequate handling strength develops. High-strength cured joints may require localized heating to approximately 250°C before mechanical disassembly. Store unopened containers in a dry location, preferably between 8°C and 21°C.
