LOCTITE 641 Retaining Compound provides secure cylindrical-part retention while remaining easier to dismantle than high-strength retaining grades. This makes it valuable for machinery requiring scheduled servicing, bearing replacement, alignment work, or inspection. The cured material fills microscopic gaps between mating surfaces, distributes load across the joint area, and reduces localized stress created by mechanical press fits alone.
The ready-to-use formulation requires no mixing, weighing, or heating. Operators can apply it manually or through controlled dispensing equipment. Henkel identifies a typical fixture time of approximately 20 minutes. The product also offers secondary curing with LOCTITE SF 7471 or SF 7649 Activator when inactive metals, low temperatures, or larger gaps slow the normal anaerobic reaction.
Typical applications include retaining bearings on shafts, securing bearings inside housings, and fixing sleeves, collars, bushings, gears, pulleys, and other cylindrical components. It is suitable for electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, industrial machinery, workshops, and rotating equipment where vibration resistance and future serviceability are important.
The adhesive is intended for close-fitting metal assemblies and fills gaps up to approximately 0.15 mm. It can be used with slip-fitted, press-fitted, and shrink-fitted joints when the correct method is followed. The product is not normally recommended for thermoplastics because stress cracking may occur, so compatibility testing is required before using it on plastics or coatings.
The uncured product is a yellow methacrylate ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of 1.07 at 25°C. Henkel lists a nominal viscosity of approximately 600 mPa·s, with test-dependent ranges published in the technical data sheet. After curing for 24 hours at 22°C, its compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 6.5 N/mm².
The operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C. Published testing also demonstrates resistance to motor oil, unleaded petrol, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol, and acetone under specified laboratory conditions. These values are typical data rather than guaranteed specifications, and final performance depends on surface preparation, metal activity, joint clearance, cure temperature, and service exposure.
Clean internal and external bonding surfaces with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. For slip fits, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar, then rotate the parts during assembly to spread the material evenly. For press fits, coat both surfaces before pressing the parts together. For shrink fits, apply adhesive to the shaft, heat the collar to create clearance, and complete assembly without disturbing the joint.
Allow the assembly to develop adequate handling strength before movement or loading. When disassembly is required, use suitable mechanical tools; difficult joints may be heated locally to approximately 250°C and separated while hot.
