LOCTITE 603 Retaining Compound provides dependable retention for bearings, bushings, shafts, sleeves, collars, and other cylindrical assemblies. By filling microscopic clearances, it distributes load across the joint, improves torque transmission, supports alignment, and reduces movement in rotating or press-fitted parts.
The ready-to-use product requires no mixing, reducing preparation time and application errors. Its low viscosity promotes rapid wetting of narrow clearances and supports slip fits, interference fits, and selected shrink-fit assemblies. Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light also allows production teams to verify adhesive coverage during inspection.
Typical applications include retaining roller bearings inside housings, securing oil-impregnated bushings, bonding sleeves or collars, mounting gears and pulleys, fixing rotors onto shafts, and strengthening press-fit assemblies. It suits motors, pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, industrial machinery, power tools, and maintenance operations.
The oil-tolerant formulation is particularly valuable for components that may retain traces of protective oil or processing fluid after normal cleaning. Heavily contaminated surfaces should still be cleaned before bonding. It is intended for close-fitting metals and requires testing on plastics, coatings, or unusual treatments.
The uncured material is a green urethane-methacrylate liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Henkel lists a nominal viscosity near 125 mPa·s and a gap-fill capability up to approximately 0.15 mm. Typical fixture time is about ten minutes, while cure speed varies with metal type, temperature, joint clearance, and activator use.
After curing for 24 hours at 22°C, published compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 22.5 N/mm². Henkel reports resistance to motor oil, gasoline, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol, and acetone under laboratory conditions. The listed operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C.
Clean internal and external bonding surfaces with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. If the metal is inactive or curing is too slow, apply LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator and allow the carrier to evaporate before assembly.
For slip fits, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar, then rotate the components during assembly to spread the liquid evenly. For press fits, coat both bonding surfaces before pressing the parts together. For shrink fits, apply the adhesive to the shaft, heat the collar to create sufficient clearance, and complete the assembly without disturbing the joint.
Allow adequate handling strength before moving or loading the components. High-strength cured joints may require localized heating to approximately 250°C for disassembly. Remove cured residue with solvent and mechanical abrasion. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
