LOCTITE 554 Thread Sealant provides maximum solvent resistance for metal threaded connections in harsh environments. The cured material helps prevent leakage and loosening caused by pressure cycling, vibration and thermal movement. Its one-part formulation eliminates weighing and mixing, reducing preparation time, application errors, and waste during maintenance.
The medium viscosity supports controlled dispensing around pipe threads without excessive running. Properly tightened fittings can seal immediately against moderate pressure, supporting assembly checks during curing. For maximum pressure and solvent resistance, Henkel recommends a minimum curing period of 24 hours.
This product is recommended for threaded fittings and pipes in refrigeration systems, chemical-processing equipment, metal and fiber plants, paper-processing facilities, waste-treatment operations, and textile manufacturing. It can replace sealing tape, litharge and glycerine mixtures, and specialized non-hardening compounds in industrial joints. Its chemical resistance makes it valuable for systems carrying aggressive fluids where ordinary methods may deteriorate.
The product is designed for threaded metal connections rather than slip-fitted tube joints. It should not be used in pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, chlorine service, or strong oxidizing environments. Plastics, particularly stress-sensitive thermoplastics, require compatibility testing because anaerobic materials may contribute to cracking.
The uncured material is a red methacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of 1.02 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a Brookfield viscosity range of 1,500 to 3,500 mPa·s under the test method. The sealant uses anaerobic curing technology and can be combined with LOCTITE SF 7471 or SF 7649 Activator when passive metals, lower temperatures, or larger gaps slow curing.
After curing, the product provides strong retention on threaded metal assemblies. Published testing on 3/8 × 24 steel nuts and bolts reports prevailing torque of at least 10.8 N·m after 24 hours and typical breakaway torque of 27.2 N·m after 72 hours. These values are representative data rather than guaranteed specifications.
Clean internal and external threads with a compatible LOCTITE cleaning solvent and allow them to dry. When activation is required, apply the selected activator to all threads and let the carrier evaporate. Dispense a continuous 360-degree bead around the leading male threads while leaving the first thread free. Work the sealant into the thread profile to fill voids.
For larger threads or clearances, increase the quantity and apply a bead to the female threads when necessary. Assemble and wrench-tighten the fitting according to manufacturer instructions. Remove cured residue with solvent and mechanical abrasion. Standard hand tools normally allow disassembly; difficult joints may require localized heating to approximately 250°C.
LOCTITE 554 Thread Sealant combines exceptional solvent resistance, service temperatures up to 149°C, one-component convenience, reliable pressure sealing, and strong threaded-joint retention. It is a professional solution for refrigeration, chemical processing, waste treatment, paper production, and textile facilities requiring dependable metal pipe sealing in demanding service environments worldwide.
