LOCTITE 620 Retaining Compound combines medium-to-high cured strength with high-temperature resistance for demanding industrial assemblies. The ready-to-use material requires no mixing, simplifying manual maintenance and automated dispensing. Its controlled viscosity helps it remain on shafts, collars, sleeves and housings during application while still wetting the mating surfaces effectively.
The adhesive fills microscopic clearances between cylindrical parts, distributes load across the bonded area and can improve torque transmission. It also limits fretting, corrosion and movement between fitted components. Henkel lists an operating-temperature range of approximately -55°C to 230°C, making this grade particularly useful where standard retaining compounds may not provide sufficient thermal capability.
Typical applications include retaining locating pins in radiator assemblies, securing bearings in automotive transmissions, locking bushings and sleeves into housings, and bonding collars, gears, pulleys and similar components onto shafts. It can be considered for electric motors, pumps, fluid-processing equipment, power-generation machinery, automotive systems and industrial maintenance.
The product is suitable for slip-fitted, press-fitted and selected shrink-fitted metal assemblies. It is designed for close cylindrical joints with gaps that may approach approximately 0.2 mm. Because performance depends on clearance, substrate activity, temperature and surface condition, manufacturers should test the actual components before approving production use.
The uncured product is a green methacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of 1.16 at 23°C. Henkel reports a Brookfield viscosity of approximately 8,500 mPa·s at 25°C, confirming its high-viscosity application profile. The official product page lists a typical fixture time of about 60 minutes, although cure speed varies with metal type, joint gap, temperature and activator use.
After 24 hours of curing at 23°C, the Technical Data Sheet reports compressive shear strength of approximately 17 N/mm² on steel pins and collars. Published testing also demonstrates resistance to motor oil, unleaded petrol, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol and acetone under specified laboratory conditions. These values are typical technical references rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications.
Clean internal and external surfaces thoroughly with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. Where passive metals, low temperatures or larger gaps slow curing, apply LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator and allow the carrier to evaporate.
For slip fits, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the male part and inside the female part, then use a rotating motion during assembly. For press fits, coat both bond surfaces and assemble at a high press-on rate. For shrink fits, apply an even film to the appropriate component and avoid condensation on cooled parts.
Do not disturb the assembly until sufficient handling strength develops. High-strength joints may require localized heating for disassembly. Remove cured residue with a suitable solvent and mechanical abrasion. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
