LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive for Close-Fitting Metal and Ceramic Bonding

Category: Brand:
LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive is a clear, light-amber, one-component modified acrylic adhesive developed for bonding close-fitting rigid metal and ceramic components. Its urethane methacrylate chemistry cures at room temperature when confined between mating surfaces with the assistance of LOCTITE SF 734 Activator. The medium-viscosity liquid provides controlled wetting and placement, making it suitable for industrial assemblies that require high shear strength without conventional two-component mixing.

LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive Benefits

LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive simplifies production because the adhesive itself is supplied as a single component. Operators do not need to weigh resin and hardener or control a complicated mixing ratio. LOCTITE SF 734 Activator is applied separately to prepare the bonding surface and promote fast, reliable curing.

The medium-viscosity formulation offers a useful balance between flow and application control. It wets close-fitting surfaces effectively while remaining easier to position than very thin anaerobic liquids. The adhesive can be applied as a controlled bead or film to rigid components before assembly.

After curing, the product develops high shear and tensile strength on prepared metal surfaces. The cured bond can also resist exposure to water, water-glycol mixtures, aircraft fuel, acetone and selected industrial solvents under the laboratory conditions published by Henkel.

Applications for LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive

LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive is intended primarily for bonding close-fitting rigid parts made from metal or ceramic. Typical applications may include metal brackets, inserts, housings, frames, machine components, ceramic elements, appliance parts, industrial fixtures and accurately fitted assemblies.

The adhesive is particularly useful when the joint requires high strength but does not need the large gap-filling capability of a thick epoxy adhesive. Its recommended bond-line gap is approximately 0.05 mm, supporting precisely manufactured parts with controlled mating dimensions.

Where the gap approaches the published maximum of approximately 0.1 mm, LOCTITE SF 734 Activator should be applied to both mating surfaces. The product is not normally recommended for thermoplastic materials because stress cracking may occur. Compatibility testing is therefore required before use on plastics, coatings or sensitive surface treatments.

LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive Technical Properties

The uncured adhesive is a clear, light-amber urethane methacrylate liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a Brookfield viscosity range of approximately 2,800 to 4,200 mPa·s at 25°C, confirming its medium-viscosity processing profile.

The official product page lists a typical fixture time of approximately 15 minutes. After curing for 24 hours at 22°C with LOCTITE SF 734 Activator applied to both surfaces, published lap-shear strength on grit-blasted steel is at least 14 N/mm². Published tensile strength on grit-blasted steel ranges from approximately 20 to 35 N/mm².

These values are typical technical references rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications. Actual curing and bond performance depend on substrate type, surface preparation, bond gap, activator coverage, ambient temperature, adhesive quantity and joint geometry.

How to Apply LOCTITE AA 317 Structural Adhesive

Clean all bonding surfaces and remove grease, oil, dust, oxidation, moisture and loose contamination. Apply LOCTITE SF 734 Activator to one mating surface and dispense the adhesive onto the other surface. Assemble the components within approximately 15 minutes and hold them securely until fixture strength develops.

For larger gaps up to approximately 0.1 mm or when faster curing is required, apply the activator to both surfaces. Apply the adhesive, assemble the components immediately and complete positioning within approximately one minute. Remove uncured excess using a compatible organic solvent.

Keep the joint clamped or securely supported until the adhesive has developed handling strength. Allow approximately 24 to 72 hours for full strength development before applying significant service loads. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
