The adhesive dispenses as a bubble-free, non-sag paste that stays in position on vertical joints and irregular surfaces. After mixing, the typical open time and work life are approximately four minutes at 23°C. The bond reaches handling strength in about 20 minutes, supporting faster production. 3M also lists a full cure time of approximately six hours under typical conditions.
Once cured, the black polyurethane remains highly flexible and helps absorb vibration, impact, thermal movement, and differences in expansion between bonded substrates. Published typical cured properties include 420% strain at break, Shore A hardness of 85, and a continuous operating-temperature range from approximately -51°C to 121°C. This supports moving joints that may not suit rigid adhesives.
Typical uses include bonding wood or metal door sills to concrete, securing door frames to wood or metal structures, attaching wood paneling to plaster, bonding aluminum shades to glass, sealing fabric water hoses, and providing structural bonding and sealing in construction assemblies. The product can also be used for staking electronic components, tamper-resistant encapsulation, and creating barriers against corrosion.
Laboratory overlap-shear results demonstrate strong bonding to prepared aluminum, cold-rolled steel, ABS, polycarbonate, acrylic, fiber-reinforced plastic, and PVC. Because performance depends on surface condition, joint design, bond-line thickness, temperature, fluids, and production controls, users should test representative parts before commercial approval.
Apply the adhesive only to clean, dry surfaces. Remove oil, grease, dust, moisture, oxidation, release agents, and loose contamination. For suitable metals and plastics, abrasion followed by a compatible solvent wipe may improve adhesion. Load the cartridge into the correct EPX applicator, confirm that both components flow evenly, attach the recommended mixing nozzle, discard the initial small amount, and dispense onto the prepared joint.
Join and secure parts within the available work life, then maintain alignment until handling strength develops. Cartridge sizes include approximately 48.5 ml and 400 ml, depending on regional availability. Store unopened material at 16°C to 27°C and 40% to 60% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight. For best performance, 3M recommends use within 18 months from manufacture.
