This industrial adhesive uses a 10:1 mix ratio by volume and contains integrated spacer beads that help maintain a controlled bond-line thickness of approximately 0.25 mm. The mixed material has a typical viscosity of around 60,000 cP, providing a stable non-sag consistency that supports accurate dispensing without uncontrolled running or migration.
At approximately 23°C, 3M Scotch-Weld DP8405NS Acrylic Adhesive provides a working life of about four to six minutes and reaches handling strength in approximately 14 to 16 minutes. Structural strength of around 6.9 MPa can develop in approximately 18 to 20 minutes, while full curing typically requires 24 hours. These rapid strength-building characteristics help manufacturers reduce clamping time, increase production throughput, and move bonded assemblies through subsequent processes more efficiently.
Typical applications include HVAC manufacturing, appliance assembly, sporting goods, specialty vehicles, sign production, electrical equipment, industrial enclosures, transportation components, and general metalworking. The adhesive can be used for panel-to-frame bonding, trim attachment, letter installation, stiffener bonding, housing assembly, bracket attachment, and joining plastics or composites to metal structures.
3M Scotch-Weld DP8405NS Acrylic Adhesive provides strong adhesion to aluminum, stainless steel, PVC, ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate, fiber-reinforced epoxy, and many painted or coated metals. It also offers improved tolerance for light oil residue compared with many conventional structural adhesives, potentially reducing surface-preparation requirements in validated applications.
For maximum bond strength, remove loose dirt, dust, heavy oil, corrosion, oxide films, paint defects, and release agents. Painted or coated metals may be cleaned with pure isopropyl alcohol and lightly abraded where additional strength is required. Avoid completely removing protective coatings from corrosion-sensitive steel unless the complete bonding process has been evaluated.
Install the correct 3M static mixing nozzle, dispense a small initial quantity to confirm uniform green color, and then apply the adhesive to one prepared surface. Join the parts within the available open time and maintain alignment until handling strength develops. Heat may be used to accelerate curing when validated for the substrates and assembly.
Low-surface-energy plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, TPO, and PTFE generally provide limited adhesion and require a different adhesive technology. Applications involving bare copper, brass, bronze, or cold-rolled steel should also be tested carefully because environmental ageing may promote corrosion at the bond interface.
