SP-7533 is designed to replace manually applied adhesive tape in applications where the adhesive must follow detailed shapes, narrow borders, openings, cut-outs, or other complex patterns. The liquid adhesive can be deposited only in the required bonding areas, helping manufacturers avoid adhesive waste in sections that will later be removed during die cutting. Its approximately 65% solids formulation also provides high usable adhesive coverage for volume production.
After the water carrier evaporates, the printed layer becomes a pressure-sensitive adhesive coating that bonds when the mating surface is brought into contact and suitable pressure is applied. This allows converters to integrate adhesive application into printing and finishing operations rather than manually positioning individual pieces of double-coated tape. Consistent printing can improve registration, simplify alignment, and support repeatable assembly.
3M SP-7533 Screen Printable Adhesive can be used on polycarbonate, other compatible plastic films, metals, and selected industrial substrates after application testing. Typical products include membrane-switch keypads, instrument control panels, graphic overlays, mobile-device components, appliance control surfaces, automotive interior parts, audio equipment, foam padding, labels, nameplates, and decorative or functional laminates.
The adhesive is particularly useful when a component contains windows, buttons, displays, indicator openings, electrical contacts, speaker openings, or die-cut holes that must remain adhesive free. The printing screen can be designed so the coating is accurately set back from these areas. This provides greater design freedom than converting a full sheet of adhesive tape and removing unwanted sections afterward.
Prepare a printing screen that matches the required adhesive pattern and provides the validated wet coating thickness. The screen, squeegee, printing surface, and handling equipment should be clean and free from dried adhesive, oil, dust, silicone contamination, and release agents. Agitate and condition the material according to the current technical instructions before production.
Print a uniform layer onto the selected face stock and ensure the adhesive pattern remains correctly registered with graphics, cut lines, windows, and openings. Dry the coating completely before applying a release liner, stacking printed parts, die cutting, packaging, or final assembly. Drying conditions depend on coating weight, airflow, temperature, humidity, substrate, and production equipment.
Once dry, protect the pressure-sensitive surface with a compatible release liner until assembly. Remove the liner, align the component, and apply firm, uniform pressure across the bonded area. Pressure-sensitive adhesives develop performance through surface contact, so clean surfaces, sufficient pressure, complete wet-out, and adequate dwell time are important.
Screen printing enables the adhesive pattern to be changed by modifying the screen rather than purchasing a completely new die-cut tape construction. This can be valuable for prototypes, product revisions, multiple graphic designs, and high-volume components with complicated bonding areas. Adhesive may also be positioned closer to an edge or accurately separated from electrical and visual features.
The process can reduce manual labor associated with placing double-liner tape pieces and may improve consistency between finished parts. Manufacturers should compare printing speed, drying capacity, coating weight, screen life, liner selection, die-cutting behavior, assembly pressure, and final bond performance when establishing the production process.
Actual adhesion varies with plastic grade, surface energy, coating, ink system, metal finish, surface contamination, printing thickness, drying conditions, and service environment. Polycarbonate and other plastics should be checked for stress cracking, staining, dimensional change, and long-term compatibility. Printed inks, clear coats, foam materials, and release liners must also be tested with the adhesive.
Evaluate peel strength, static shear, elevated-temperature exposure, aging, humidity, chemicals, and environmental durability on representative finished parts. Applications involving prolonged water exposure require particular qualification because performance requirements vary significantly between assemblies.
Keep the container tightly closed when not in use and protect the material from contamination, freezing, excessive heat, and prolonged storage outside the conditions stated on the current label.
