DOWSIL 3140 RTV Coating Performance

DOWSIL 3140 uses a one-part polydimethylsiloxane system. The uncured product is a clear to slightly hazy viscous liquid with typical viscosity of approximately 34,400 mPa·s, about 95.7% nonvolatile content, and no added solvent. After dispensing, it can flow, fill, and self-level across selected areas while remaining suitable for controlled needle or syringe application.

Published tack-free time is approximately 116 minutes at 25°C. Moisture-cure silicones generally develop most physical properties within 24 to 72 hours, depending on coating thickness, humidity, temperature, and air exposure. Mild heat below approximately 60°C can accelerate curing, but production settings should be validated with actual boards, components, coating thicknesses, and equipment.

The silicone can be considered for many applications from approximately -45°C to 200°C, although performance near either limit depends on exposure time and assembly design.

Application and Surface Preparation Guidance

Clean all surfaces and remove oil, grease, dust, moisture, flux residue, release agents, and oxide films. Light abrasion may improve adhesion on suitable substrates, followed by a compatible solvent wipe. The coating can adhere without primer to many reactive metals, ceramics, glass, laminates, resins, and selected plastics. Polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE, and highly plasticized materials may require treatment or primer.

Apply a controlled layer and allow atmospheric moisture to reach the exposed material. Deep or confined sections cure slowly because moisture enters from the surface inward. The product is intended for splash or intermittent solvent exposure rather than continuous fuel or solvent immersion. Validate adhesion, coating thickness, cure, insulation, thermal cycling, vibration, and chemical resistance before mass production.
