LOCTITE 222MS Threadlocker provides reliable fastener locking without making routine maintenance unnecessarily difficult. Unlike high-strength threadlockers, it allows adjustment screws, set screws and other small threaded components to be removed using ordinary hand tools. This makes it valuable for equipment that requires periodic adjustment, servicing or replacement of delicate fasteners.
The one-component formulation requires no mixing and can be dispensed directly onto the required thread-engagement area. Its thixotropic character reduces unwanted migration after application, helping operators maintain accurate placement on small bolts, screws and threaded fittings. Positive fluorescence under ultraviolet light also supports application inspection during manufacturing.
The controlled lubricity of the uncured material helps maintain predictable tightening behavior and clamp loads. This is particularly important in precision assemblies where excessive friction variation could produce inconsistent fastener tension or damage small components.
LOCTITE 222MS Threadlocker is recommended for adjustment screws, countersunk screws and set screws used on collars, pulleys, tool holders, controllers and precision mechanical assemblies. It can also be used on small fasteners installed in pumps, gearboxes, presses, instruments, appliances and industrial equipment exposed to vibration.
The low-strength formulation is suitable for relatively soft metals such as aluminum and brass, where excessive removal torque could damage the threads or shear the fastener. It can also be evaluated on steel, stainless steel, zinc-plated parts and other compatible metallic surfaces.
LOCTITE 222MS is tested to specified requirements of MIL-S-46163A Type II Grade M. Henkel also lists it under ASTM D5363 Group 3, Class 1, Grade 1. These military and industrial qualifications may be regional or batch-specific, so buyers should request the appropriate certificate for the supplied product before including the approval in controlled documentation.
LOCTITE 222MS Threadlocker is a purple dimethacrylate-ester liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.05 at 25°C. Its published Brookfield viscosity is approximately 800 to 1,600 mPa·s at 20 rpm, while its shear-thinning behavior provides greater resistance to flow when the material is stationary.
Henkel lists a typical fixture time of approximately 20 minutes. After 24 hours at 22°C, published breakaway torque on M10 steel nuts and bolts ranges from approximately 3 to 9 N·m, with prevailing torque from approximately 1 to 6 N·m. The listed operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C.
Laboratory testing demonstrates resistance to motor oil, petrol, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, acetone and ethanol under specified conditions. These values are typical reference data rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications. Actual performance depends on thread size, material, surface finish, clearance, tightening torque, temperature and curing conditions.
Clean the internal and external threads with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. Shake the container thoroughly before use. When passive metals, low temperatures or large clearances slow curing, apply LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator and allow it to dry.
For through-hole assemblies, apply several drops around the bolt where the nut will engage. For blind holes, dispense the adhesive into the lower internal threads and add a small amount to the male thread when required. Assemble the components and tighten them to the specified torque within the available fixture-time window.
Standard hand tools are normally sufficient for disassembly. In rare cases involving unusually long thread engagement, localized heating may assist removal. Store unopened containers in a dry location, ideally between 8°C and 21°C.
LOCTITE 222MS Threadlocker combines low-strength locking, controlled lubricity, easy maintenance removal, vibration resistance and recognized military-specification testing. It is a dependable choice for small fasteners, precision adjustment screws and aluminum or brass assemblies requiring secure locking without permanent retention.
