LOCTITE 422 Instant Adhesive combines rapid curing with excellent adhesion to many common industrial substrates. Henkel lists a general fixture-time range of approximately 20 to 40 seconds, helping manufacturers shorten clamping time and move bonded parts through production more efficiently.
The high-viscosity formula is especially useful for vertical surfaces, controlled dots, short beads and components with slightly uneven mating areas. Its listed gap-filling capability is up to approximately 0.15 mm, although Henkel recommends thin bond lines near 0.05 mm for the fastest curing and best overall performance.
The one-part formulation eliminates resin-to-hardener measurement and mixing errors. Its ultra-clear appearance also supports visible joints where a dark or colored adhesive line would be undesirable. For difficult-to-bond, low-surface-energy plastics, LOCTITE SF 770 Primer can be applied before bonding to improve adhesion.
LOCTITE 422 Instant Adhesive can bond compatible plastics, elastomers and metallic components used in industrial manufacturing, maintenance, appliance assembly and general repair. Typical applications include plastic housings, rubber seals, gaskets, small metal fittings, electronic enclosures, molded components, automotive trim, appliance parts and precision assemblies.
Published substrate data include ABS, rigid PVC, polycarbonate, phenolic materials, neoprene rubber, nitrile rubber, steel, aluminum and zinc-dichromate surfaces. Because plastic formulations, coatings, release agents and surface treatments vary, manufacturers should validate adhesion using the actual production components before commercial use.
The uncured product is a transparent ethyl-cyanoacrylate liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.05 at 25°C. Henkel publishes a viscosity range of approximately 1,700 to 3,000 mPa·s using a cone-and-plate test method and approximately 2,000 to 2,500 mPa·s using the specified Brookfield method.
Fixture time depends on substrate type, temperature, humidity and bond gap. Representative results include approximately 10 to 30 seconds on aluminum, 20 to 50 seconds on degreased steel, 15 to 40 seconds on ABS and less than five seconds on neoprene or nitrile rubber under the stated laboratory conditions.
After 24 hours at 22°C, published lap-shear strength ranges include approximately 18 to 26 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel, 12 to 19 N/mm² on grit-blasted aluminum and 6 to 20 N/mm² on ABS or PVC. The cured adhesive also provides electrical insulation, including a dielectric breakdown strength of approximately 25 kV/mm.
Clean and degrease all bonding surfaces and allow them to dry completely. Apply a small quantity of adhesive to one surface, assemble the parts immediately and hold them accurately in position until fixture strength develops. Excessive adhesive can slow curing and may create white blooming around the bonded area.
Apply LOCTITE SF 770 Primer to difficult-to-bond plastics and allow it to dry before dispensing the adhesive. When large gaps or environmental conditions make curing too slow, LOCTITE SF 7452 or SF 7455 Activator may be evaluated. Activators can reduce ultimate bond strength, so production testing is recommended.
LOCTITE 422 Instant Adhesive offers high-viscosity application control, rapid fixturing, clear appearance and dependable adhesion to plastics, rubber and metals. It is a practical solution for manufacturers and maintenance teams requiring fast bonding with less dripping and improved gap-filling capability.
Store unopened containers in a dry refrigerated location between 2°C and 8°C.
