LOCTITE 435 is based on ethyl cyanoacrylate technology and cures when confined between close-fitting surfaces in the presence of atmospheric moisture. No measuring, mixing, heating, or separate hardener is required. The uncured adhesive is a colorless to straw-colored, slightly cloudy liquid with a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.1 and viscosity of 100 to 250 mPa·s at 25°C.
The low viscosity helps the adhesive spread through narrow interfaces and wet accurately fitted parts. Henkel lists a maximum gap-filling capability of approximately 0.15 mm, although the technical data sheet states that the best performance is normally achieved with a thin bond gap of about 0.05 mm. Larger gaps reduce curing speed and may require an appropriate LOCTITE activator after application testing.
The adhesive is suitable for bonding steel, aluminum, ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, phenolic materials, epoxy laminates, nitrile rubber, neoprene, SBR, magnets, wood, paper, leather, and fabric. Its surface-insensitive behavior also makes it useful on porous, absorbent, or mildly acidic substrates that may cure more slowly with conventional cyanoacrylate adhesives.
Typical applications include bonding magnets into electric motor housings, attaching rubber seals to metal components, assembling plastic housings, fixing electronic parts, joining appliance components, bonding instrument parts, repairing leather products, and securing porous materials. The clear appearance is beneficial for assemblies where visible adhesive lines could reduce the finished product’s appearance.
Fixture time varies according to the substrate. Henkel reports approximately 30 to 45 seconds on degreased steel, no more than 60 seconds on aluminum, less than five seconds on nitrile rubber, 10 to 20 seconds on ABS, 60 to 75 seconds on PVC, and 45 to 60 seconds on polycarbonate under reference conditions of 22°C and 50% relative humidity.
After curing for 24 hours at 22°C, Henkel reports typical lap-shear strength of approximately 19 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel and 15 N/mm² on aluminum. Published block-shear values include approximately 14 N/mm² on ABS, 9 N/mm² on PVC, 6 N/mm² on polycarbonate, 13 N/mm² on phenolic material, and 20 N/mm² on G-10 epoxy laminate.
The toughened adhesive also provides approximately 4 N/mm of 180-degree peel strength on grit-blasted steel and at least 4 joules of side-impact resistance on aluminum under the specified laboratory methods. The recommended operating-temperature range is approximately -40°C to 100°C. Actual performance depends on substrate preparation, bond gap, loading direction, curing conditions, chemicals, and environmental exposure.
Ensure that both surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, dust, oxidation, mold-release agents, and loose contamination. Apply a small quantity to one surface. Excessive adhesive can increase fixture time and reduce joint performance, so only enough material should be used to wet the bonding area.
Join the parts immediately and maintain firm contact until fixture strength develops. The components should fit closely, and movement should be avoided during initial curing. Although useful handling strength develops quickly, curing continues for at least 24 hours before full chemical and solvent resistance is achieved.
When bonding porous materials, apply enough adhesive to compensate for absorption without flooding the joint. Activators may accelerate curing on large gaps or inactive surfaces, but they can reduce ultimate bond strength. Complete testing is therefore recommended before incorporating an activator into a production process.
LOCTITE 435 has been tested according to Henkel protocols based on ISO 10993 biocompatibility standards to assist manufacturers in selecting materials for medical-device applications. This testing does not replace qualification of the completed device. Manufacturers must evaluate the adhesive under the device’s actual sterilization, biological-contact, manufacturing, and regulatory requirements.
Henkel laboratory data shows useful resistance to motor oil, gasoline, ethanol, isopropanol, and high-humidity exposure after complete curing. The product should not be used in pure oxygen, oxygen-rich systems, or as a sealant for chlorine and other strong oxidizing substances.
Store unopened containers in a dry location between 2°C and 8°C. Allow refrigerated adhesive to reach a suitable dispensing temperature before use while keeping the container closed to prevent moisture condensation. Do not return dispensed or potentially contaminated material to the original bottle. The official Henkel Taiwan listing identifies a 20 g bottle, while package availability may differ by region.
