LOCTITE 649 Retaining Compound offers an efficient alternative to welding, keyways, splines, and heavy interference fits in many cylindrical assembly applications. By filling microscopic gaps across the joint area, it distributes load more evenly and helps improve torque transmission. The one-part formula requires no weighing or mixing, supporting faster preparation and consistent manual or automated dispensing.
The low-viscosity liquid is useful for accurately machined components where complete surface wetting is important. It fluoresces under ultraviolet light, allowing operators to inspect adhesive coverage during production. The product can also be used with LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator when inactive metals, larger gaps, or low processing temperatures slow the anaerobic cure.
Typical applications include retaining bearings on shafts, securing bushings and sleeves inside housings, fixing gears or pulleys, bonding rotors to motor shafts, strengthening press fits, and assembling cylindrical components in pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and industrial machinery. It is suitable for slip-fitted, press-fitted, and shrink-fitted metal assemblies when the correct application method is followed.
The adhesive is designed for close-fitting metal surfaces and can cure across controlled gaps up to approximately 0.25 mm, although smaller clearances normally provide faster strength development. It should not normally be used on thermoplastics without compatibility testing because stress cracking may occur. Users should validate the product with unusual coatings, cleaning residues, or service chemicals before production approval.
The uncured material is a green urethane methacrylate liquid with positive ultraviolet fluorescence and a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.12 at 25°C. Published viscosity is 550 to 950 mPa·s under one Brookfield test condition, confirming its low-viscosity processing profile. After curing for 72 hours at 22°C, compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 15 N/mm².
Henkel testing also demonstrates resistance after exposure to motor oil, unleaded gasoline, brake fluid, ethanol, acetone, and water-glycol mixtures. Heat-aging data includes extended exposure at 150°C and 180°C. These values are representative technical data rather than guaranteed purchase specifications, and actual performance depends on surface condition, joint clearance, metal activity, cure temperature, adhesive quantity, and service environment.
Clean internal and external bonding surfaces with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry. For slip fits, apply adhesive around the leading edge of the shaft and inside the collar, then rotate the parts during assembly to spread the material evenly. For press fits, coat both surfaces before pressing the components together.
For shrink fits, apply the adhesive to the shaft, heat the collar to create sufficient clearance, and complete assembly without disturbing the joint. Allow adequate handling strength before moving or loading the components. High-strength cured assemblies may require localized heating to approximately 250°C for disassembly. Remove cured residue using a suitable solvent and mechanical abrasion.
