Supplied as a light-yellow-to-amber solid, it melts for controlled dispensing and develops useful initial strength as the bond line cools. A secondary moisture-curing reaction then cross-links the adhesive, producing a flexible, durable structural bond that does not remelt after full cure. Its combination of robotic processability, relatively long open time, and strong adhesion to selected plastics and metals supports efficient high-volume manufacturing.

The adhesive is designed for application between 90°C and 110°C. At 100°C, its published Brookfield Thermosel viscosity is approximately 3,500 to 7,500 mPa·s, supporting controlled bead dispensing through suitable heated equipment. Henkel reports an open time of less than four minutes at 25°C using a 1 mm bead. This window allows parts to be positioned before solidification while still supporting rapid handling strength once the material cools in the joint.

Unlike conventional non-reactive hot melts, the cured material undergoes additional chemical cross-linking through atmospheric moisture. This dual mechanism combines immediate physical setting with longer-term structural durability. Typical cured properties include Shore D hardness of 30, elongation at break of 860%, tensile strength above 8 MPa, thermal conductivity of 0.21 W/m·K, and a glass-transition temperature of approximately -39°C.

LOCTITE HHD 3542 Reactive Hot Melt Adhesive is suitable for automated bonding of compatible electronic housings, frames, plastic components, metal inserts, and other precision assemblies. Henkel reports lap-shear strength of approximately 7.2 MPa on anodized aluminum and 4.8 MPa on PC/ABS after seven days at 22°C. Published cross-bond tensile values are approximately 4.8 MPa on anodized aluminum and 5.8 MPa on PC/ABS under the stated test conditions.

Official testing reports retained strength after exposure to heat, humidity, thermal cycling, heat shock, motor oil, isopropanol, water, and water-glycol mixtures. Actual performance depends on substrate grade, surface treatment, bead size, temperature, humidity, and service conditions, so production trials remain essential.

Applying LOCTITE HHD 3542 Reactive Hot Melt Adhesive

Remove paint, oxide, oil, dust, release agents, and other contamination from the bonding surfaces. Heat the adhesive within the recommended range using compatible equipment. Apply it to one substrate, join the parts within the open time, and prevent movement until the bond has set. For higher final strength, Henkel recommends allowing the assembly to cure at 22°C for at least 24 hours.
