The tape has a nominal total thickness of 0.064 mm, including a 0.025 mm polyester backing coated on one side with acrylic adhesive. Available colors include yellow, white, and black, allowing manufacturers to select visible insulation, component identification, or color-coding options. The polyester carrier provides dimensional stability and mechanical strength, while the acrylic adhesive offers immediate pressure-sensitive bonding and helps minimize corrosion on properly prepared electrical components.
3M publishes minimum adhesion to steel of 2.7 N/cm, minimum breaking strength of 35 N/cm, and minimum elongation of 50 percent. The tape also provides dielectric breakdown of at least 5,000 volts and high-humidity insulation resistance of at least 1 × 1012 ohms. These typical values support electrical insulation, wrapping, bundling, and component protection when the tape is validated for the intended assembly.
Common applications include wrapping coils, capacitors, transformers, shaded-pole motors, fractional-horsepower motors, and wire harnesses. The tape can protect conductors, separate layers, secure winding ends, bundle leads, and provide a printable identification surface. Authorized distributors and converters can also supply custom slit widths, rolls, tabs, and die-cut insulation components.
The product is recognized as flame retardant under the applicable UL standard and carries UL and CSA temperature ratings for continuous operation not exceeding 130°C. It is also RoHS compliant. These approvals and characteristics make the tape useful in industrial electrical systems, although designers must evaluate the complete insulation system, operating voltage, thermal exposure, chemicals, mechanical stress, and regulatory requirements before approval.
Apply the tape to clean, dry surfaces free from oil, dust, moisture, flux, release agents, and loose contamination. Use firm pressure to create adhesive contact around curved windings, edges, terminals, and overlapping layers. Avoid stretching the polyester backing excessively, because tension can cause lifting or flagging after application. Evaluate overlap, wrap tension, edge position, temperature, and dwell time using representative production parts.
Store unused rolls in original packaging in humidity-controlled conditions between 10°C and 27°C and below 75 percent relative humidity. Under these recommended conditions, 3M states a five-year shelf life from the manufacturing date. Protect the tape from sunlight, contamination, extreme heat, and damaged roll edges.
