3M 4799 Industrial Adhesive provides a firm bond that remains flexible after drying. This flexibility helps the joint tolerate normal movement, vibration, handling, and dimensional change without becoming excessively brittle. The cured adhesive is water resistant and offers useful heat resistance, making it suitable for outdoor assemblies.
The formulation builds strength quickly and shows low soak-in on many porous substrates. This helps keep more adhesive near the bonding interface instead of allowing it to disappear deeply into canvas, felt, wood, or similar materials. A uniform coating can therefore deliver efficient coverage and consistent contact across the joint.
Recommended applications include bonding EPDM weatherstripping, joining rubber sheets, sealing flexible rubber edges, attaching roofing-membrane details, and completing maintenance work. The adhesive can also bond sponge rubber, felt, canvas, linoleum, and lightweight materials to metal panels, wooden structures, concrete surfaces, and selected plastics after compatibility testing.
3M 4799 Industrial Adhesive is useful where a flexible solvent-based adhesive is preferred over mechanical fasteners or rigid bonding. Typical users include transportation equipment manufacturers, industrial maintenance departments, roofing contractors, rubber fabricators, and general assembly operations. Every application should be validated using the actual substrate, surface finish, joint design, and service environment.
The uncured adhesive has a black appearance and an SBR base. The current 3M Technical Data Sheet lists a viscosity of approximately 7,500 to 18,000 cP, solids content of about 28% to 35% by weight, and net weight of approximately 6.6 to 7 lb per gallon. Its carrier system includes petroleum distillate, n-hexane, and toluene.
Published 180-degree peel testing for canvas bonded to steel shows that adhesion continues to build with dwell time. Actual performance depends on coating weight, open time, surface preparation, contact pressure, temperature, humidity, and substrate porosity.
Make sure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, moisture, and loose contamination. Stir or agitate the adhesive thoroughly before use. For best results, keep both the adhesive and the substrates at or above 18°C during application.
For porous assemblies, apply a uniform, generous coat to the less porous surface, join the materials immediately, and use sufficient pressure to create complete contact. For non-porous assemblies, coat both surfaces and allow the adhesive to dry until tacky but no longer transfers. Then align the parts carefully and press them together firmly.
Use the product with suitable ventilation because the solvent system is highly flammable. Follow the current Safety Data Sheet and workplace requirements for protection, storage, handling, and cleanup. Store unopened packaging between 16°C and 27°C, away from direct sunlight. The published shelf life is 24 months from manufacture under recommended conditions.
