3M DP8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive is a two-component acrylic adhesive engineered to create strong structural bonds on difficult low-surface-energy plastics. It bonds many grades of polypropylene, polyethylene, thermoplastic polyolefin, and thermoplastic elastomers without chemical etching, flame treatment, plasma treatment, corona treatment, or primer. This capability can simplify assembly processes while reducing the equipment, labor, and handling steps normally required for polyolefin bonding.
The adhesive can also join compatible metals, ceramics, wood, composites, and many conventional plastics. It is particularly useful for assemblies combining plastic with metal or another dissimilar substrate. Its slightly flexible cured structure helps the joint tolerate impact, vibration, and differences in thermal expansion more effectively than a completely rigid adhesive.
3M DP8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive uses a 10:1 base-to-accelerator mixing ratio by volume. At 23°C, the latest 3M technical data lists an eight-minute work life, approximately ten minutes of open time, and a set time of about 60 minutes. The adhesive reaches at least 80% of its ultimate aluminum overlap-shear strength in approximately 24 hours under the specified test conditions.
The blue-green mixed adhesive has a typical dispensing viscosity of approximately 25,000 cP at 23°C. This medium viscosity provides controlled application while allowing the material to spread and wet the bonding surface. Built-in spacer beads help maintain a consistent bond line, improving process control during manual or production dispensing.
After curing, the adhesive has a typical Shore D hardness of 55 to 60 and approximately 90% elongation at break. Representative overlap-shear results include about 1,960 psi on prepared aluminum, 1,800 psi on cold-rolled steel, 1,150 psi on polycarbonate, 360 psi on low-density polyethylene, and 770 psi on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. 3M DP8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive is suitable for bonding polypropylene tanks, polyethylene components, TPO panels, TPE parts, appliance components, sporting goods, transportation assemblies, construction products, composite structures, plastic housings, and plastic-to-metal components. In suitable designs, it can replace screws, rivets, plastic welding, and multi-stage surface-treatment processes.
Potential applications include attaching brackets to polypropylene housings, bonding polyethylene panels to metal frames, assembling plastic equipment covers, securing molded components, and joining impact-resistant sporting-goods parts. Actual performance depends on the exact polymer grade, additives, surface contamination, joint geometry, bond-line thickness, operating temperature, and environmental exposure.
Before application, remove dust, oil, moisture, dirt, and mold-release agents from both surfaces. Many clean polyolefin substrates require only an isopropyl-alcohol wipe rather than specialized pretreatment. More demanding metal or conventional-plastic applications may benefit from abrasion followed by another solvent cleaning step.
Insert the Duo-Pak cartridge into a compatible 10:1 3M EPX applicator. Dispense a small quantity to confirm that both components flow correctly, then attach the approved static mixing nozzle. Apply the adhesive and close the joint within the available open time. Keep the components correctly aligned and prevent movement until adequate handling strength develops.
The recommended bond-line range is approximately 0.13 to 0.51 mm. Thinner bond lines generally maximize shear strength, while somewhat thicker bond lines can improve peel performance. Cure the assembly at 16°C or above. Controlled heating up to approximately 66°C may accelerate curing when the bonded components can tolerate the temperature.
Store 3M DP8010 Structural Plastic Adhesive in its unopened original packaging at approximately 0°C to 4°C, and do not freeze it. Allow refrigerated cartridges to reach room temperature before dispensing. The latest technical data lists a shelf life of up to 18 months for cartridges when stored under the recommended conditions.
