3M Novec 2708 Electronic Grade Coating is a single-component fluorinated polymer coating developed for moisture, chemical, corrosion, and contamination protection of printed circuit boards and sensitive electronic components. The low-viscosity, low-surface-tension solution spreads across complex surfaces and reaches beneath low-standoff SMT devices, forming an ultrathin protective film with minimal added weight or dimensional change. It dries rapidly at room temperature without post-application curing, making it suitable for electronics manufacturing, precision assembly, inspection, maintenance, and repair processes.

Ultrathin UV-detectable fluorinated coating for PCB moisture, corrosion, anti-wetting, and contamination protection.

3M Novec 2708 Electronic Grade Coating Performance

The coating solution contains 8.0% by weight fluorinated polymer in 3M Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid with less than 5% PGMEA. Typical solution properties include a density of 1.4 g/ml at 23°C, viscosity of 4.9 cP, and boiling point of approximately 79°C. After the carrier solvent evaporates, the material leaves a transparent light-yellow to orange coating with a typical thickness of approximately 0.4 to 5.0 microns, depending on the selected application method and deposition amount.

The dried film provides strong hydrophobic and oleophobic behavior. Water, hydrocarbons, silicones, lubricating oils, and photoresist solutions can bead and drain from properly coated surfaces, helping reduce wetting, liquid migration, corrosion, and contamination. A yellow-orange dye built into the polymer fluoresces under ultraviolet light, allowing operators and quality-control teams to confirm coating presence and identify missed areas during inspection.

PCB and Precision Electronic Applications

3M Novec 2708 Electronic Grade Coating can be used on printed circuit boards, sensors, connectors, displays, spindle motors, lubricated electronic parts, automotive modules, communication devices, industrial controls, and other precision assemblies. It adheres to many metals, glass, ceramics, polymers, composites, and laminates. Its electrical stability and dielectric properties support applications requiring insulation and environmental protection without the thickness of conventional potting compounds.

The coating is suitable for spray, dip, brush, and selective-dispensing processes. Its excellent surface wetting supports coverage beneath tightly spaced components, while rapid solvent evaporation allows coated parts to be handled in under two minutes under suitable room-temperature conditions. It also supports solder-through repair, helping technicians access selected joints without completely stripping the surrounding coating.

7 Benefits of 3M Novec 2708 Electronic Grade Coating

  • Single-component application: Requires no measuring, mixing, or hardener preparation.
  • Rapid room-temperature drying: Eliminates the need for a post-application curing process.
  • Ultrathin protection: Adds minimal weight and dimensional change to precision assemblies.
  • Environmental resistance: Helps protect against moisture, chemicals, corrosion, and contamination.
  • UV inspection: Fluorescent dye supports fast production-line quality control.
  • Excellent surface wetting: Reaches beneath low-clearance SMT components and narrow spaces.
  • Flexible processing: Suitable for spraying, dipping, brushing, and selective dispensing.

Application, Removal, and Storage Guidance

Clean and dry all surfaces before coating. Remove oils, dust, moisture, flux residue, and other contamination that could interfere with deposition. Water must be kept out of dip tanks because it can disrupt coating formation. Apply a controlled amount using the validated process, then allow the solvent to evaporate fully before handling or testing the assembly.

The product may be diluted with 3M Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid. Where removal is required, 3M Novec 72DA Engineered Fluid is identified as the preferred option, while Novec 7200 may also be used. Store unopened containers between 16°C and 27°C at less than 60% relative humidity. The published shelf life is two years from the manufacturing date in the original sealed package.
