LOCTITE 417 Temporary Bonding Adhesive combines rapid application with controlled, removable adhesion. The fluid consistency, typically 3 to 8 mPa·s at 25°C, allows the adhesive to spread into thin interfaces and wick along the edge of small assembled parts. This is useful where a thick adhesive layer would interfere with alignment or subsequent processing.
The product develops enough holding power for temporary operations without creating the high removal force associated with structural adhesives. Bonded parts can later be separated by ultrasonic immersion in heated detergent solution, controlled heating, or, for suitably rigid components, carefully applied impact. These options help manufacturers reuse fixtures, recover components, or complete secondary operations.
Typical uses include temporary positioning of metal or glass components before machining, polishing, inspection, measurement, coating, processing, or final assembly. The product can support optical component handling, small metal part positioning, temporary glass attachment, manufacturing fixtures, laboratory work, and precision production where low adhesion is preferred.
Because LOCTITE 417 is formulated for low-strength temporary bonding, it should not be selected for permanent structural joints, safety-critical assemblies, high-peel loading, or applications requiring long-term resistance to severe mechanical stress. Validate the process using the actual substrates, bond area, gap, operating temperature, removal method, and required holding time.
The uncured material is a transparent, very low-viscosity liquid based on plasticized ethyl cyanoacrylate chemistry. Published typical values include a specific gravity of approximately 1.05 at 25°C and viscosity of 3 to 8 mPa·s. Curing begins through atmospheric moisture, and thin bond lines cure faster than wider gaps. Although handling strength develops relatively quickly, curing continues for at least 24 hours.
After curing for 24 hours at 22°C, published properties include Shore C hardness near 70 and lap-shear strength on grit-blasted steel of no more than approximately 2.8 N/mm². These figures illustrate the intentionally low-strength performance and are typical reference values rather than guaranteed specifications.
Clean and dry both mating surfaces before application. Apply one or several drops to one surface and allow assembly pressure to spread the material into a thin film. For small fitted parts, apply the adhesive at the joint edge and allow it to wick into the interface. Position the components accurately, mate them immediately, and avoid disturbing the assembly while initial strength develops.
Allow at least 15 to 20 minutes of curing before processing. For ultrasonic removal, published guidance describes using a 10% to 15% detergent-and-water solution heated to approximately 80°C to 88°C. Heat debonding may be performed by raising the bond line to approximately 135°C and separating the parts while warm. Test every removal process to prevent damage to heat-sensitive or dimensionally critical components.
