LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant for Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Fine-Threaded Metal Fittings

Category: Brand:
LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant is a brown, one-component anaerobic sealant developed for locking and sealing fine-threaded metal pipes and fittings. Its low-viscosity, thixotropic formulation flows into close thread clearances while limiting unwanted migration after application. Once confined without air between mating metal surfaces, the product cures to form a medium-strength seal that helps prevent leakage and loosening caused by pressure, shock and vibration.

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant Benefits

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant is particularly suitable for hydraulic and pneumatic piping systems where clean, dependable sealing is required. The formulation contains no fillers or solid particles that could separate from the sealant and obstruct filters, valves or narrow fluid passages. This makes it a practical option for fluid-filtration equipment and precision fluid-power assemblies.

Properly tightened fittings provide an immediate seal against moderate pressure, allowing manufacturers and maintenance teams to complete preliminary pressure checks soon after assembly. For maximum pressure and solvent resistance, the sealed connection should be allowed to cure for at least 24 hours.

The one-component formulation requires no resin-to-hardener mixing, helping reduce preparation time, proportioning errors and material waste. Its medium cured strength also allows most fittings to be dismantled with standard hand tools when maintenance, adjustment or component replacement is required.

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant Applications

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant is designed for fine-threaded metal connections used in hydraulic, pneumatic and general industrial systems. Typical applications include hydraulic fittings, pneumatic couplings, valves, pumps, compressors, pressure-control equipment, filtration systems and machinery fluid lines.

The product is suitable for close-fitting steel, stainless-steel, brass, copper and compatible plated-metal threads after appropriate surface preparation. Passive metals, lower temperatures and larger thread clearances can slow anaerobic curing. In these conditions, LOCTITE SF 7471 or LOCTITE SF 7649 Activator may be used after process validation.

LOCTITE 542 is intended primarily for metallic connections. It is not normally recommended for thermoplastic components because some plastics may experience stress cracking. Compatibility testing is therefore necessary before applying the product to plastic fittings, painted surfaces or sensitive coatings.

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant Technical Properties

LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant is based on dimethacrylate-ester acrylic technology and has a typical specific gravity of approximately 1.06 at 25°C. Published Brookfield viscosity is approximately 400 to 800 mPa·s at 20 rpm and 1,200 to 2,750 mPa·s at 2.5 rpm, demonstrating its low-viscosity, shear-thinning application profile.

After 24 hours of curing at 22°C, published breakaway torque on M10 steel nuts and bolts is approximately 15 N·m, while prevailing torque is approximately 9 N·m. Typical compressive shear strength on steel pins and collars is at least 6.5 N/mm². The listed operating-temperature range is approximately -55°C to 150°C.

The cured material demonstrates resistance to motor oil, unleaded petrol, brake fluid, water-glycol mixtures, ethanol and acetone under specified laboratory conditions. These values are typical technical references rather than guaranteed purchasing specifications. Actual performance depends on thread material, surface condition, clearance, application quantity, tightening torque and curing temperature.

How to Apply LOCTITE 542 Thread Sealant

Clean the internal and external threads with a compatible LOCTITE cleaner and allow them to dry completely. Apply a continuous 360-degree bead around the leading male threads while leaving the first thread free. Work the liquid into the thread profile to fill all available spaces.

For larger threads or clearances, increase the applied quantity and add a complete bead to the female threads when necessary. Assemble and wrench-tighten the fitting according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Remove excess uncured material with a lint-free cloth and a suitable cleaner.

Most cured connections can be dismantled with standard hand tools. Where excessive thread engagement or fittings larger than one inch prevent normal removal, localized heating to approximately 250°C may be required before disassembly.
