Officially marketed as LOCTITE SI 598, the thixotropic paste cures at room temperature when exposed to atmospheric moisture, creating a tough silicone-rubber seal. Its non-sag consistency supports controlled application on horizontal and vertical flange surfaces while limiting movement after dispensing.
The product is particularly suitable for assemblies exposed to engine oil, vibration, weathering, and repeated thermal cycling. Unlike rigid pre-cut gaskets, the liquid-applied material follows the exact flange profile and fills minor surface irregularities before curing. The product is not recommended for components that remain in direct contact with gasoline.
Typical uncured properties include a specific gravity between 1.27 and 1.32 at 25°C. Under Henkel’s published curing conditions of 25°C and approximately 50% relative humidity, the tack-free time is no more than 25 minutes. Full performance develops over approximately 72 hours, although the actual cure rate depends on humidity, temperature, bead thickness, joint depth, and exposure to air.
After seven days of curing, the silicone provides a typical tensile strength of at least 1.3 N/mm², elongation of at least 325%, and Shore A hardness between 26 and 40. Assemble the parts within a few minutes because moisture curing begins immediately after the material is exposed to air.
Tighten the fasteners according to the equipment manufacturer’s recommended sequence and torque. Wipe away uncured excess using a suitable non-polar solvent after confirming surface compatibility. Allow sufficient curing before exposing the assembly to full operating pressure, oil, elevated temperature, or mechanical loading. Automated production can use an appropriate volumetric dispensing system for consistent bead placement.
