Dymax SpeedMask 718 Thermal Spray Maskant for Turbine Component Protection

Categories: ,
Dymax SpeedMask 718 Thermal Spray Maskant is a UV- and visible-light-curable masking resin developed for temporary protection of turbine components during demanding thermal spray operations. The high-viscosity, thixotropic gel creates a hard, durable barrier over selected surfaces and cavities, helping manufacturers protect areas that must remain free from coating during air plasma spray, high-velocity oxy-fuel, wire arc spray, and D-gun processes. With no added nonreactive solvents and cure times measured in seconds under suitable light-curing equipment, it supports faster aerospace production, overhaul, repair, and rework workflows.

Dymax SpeedMask 718 Thermal Spray Maskant Performance

Dymax SpeedMask 718 Thermal Spray Maskant is formulated for nickel alloys and high-temperature steel commonly used in turbine blades, vanes, and related engine components. Its controlled gel consistency helps the material remain in position on edges, recesses, cavities, and shaped surfaces before curing. Once exposed to an appropriate UV or broad-spectrum light source, the resin forms a rigid protective mask that resists flame-spray processing and maintains clearly defined boundaries between coated and uncoated areas.

Typical uncured properties include a nominal viscosity of 46,000 cP at 20 rpm, density of 1.7 g/ml, and an acrylated urethane chemical base. The opaque gel contains no nonreactive solvents, so users do not need to wait for solvent evaporation before initiating the curing process. This supports efficient manual, semi-automated, and fully automated dispensing while reducing production delays associated with conventional solvent-containing masking materials.

Durable Protection for APS and HVOF Coating

After curing, the material provides a typical Shore D hardness of 80, tensile strength of approximately 41 MPa, elongation at break of about 3%, and modulus of elasticity near 965 MPa. Its low linear shrinkage of approximately 0.3% helps the cured mask maintain dimensional stability during processing. These properties make it suitable for protecting precision areas that require clean coating limits and dependable resistance during high-energy thermal spray exposure.

Applications include masking turbine blades, turbine vanes, engine components, cavities, holes, slots, and selected surfaces during APS, HVOF, wire arc spray, and D-gun coating. The product supports original equipment manufacturing as well as maintenance, repair, overhaul, and component rework. After coating, the cured mask can be removed through incineration at a minimum temperature of 650°C, leaving a residue-free surface with minimal ash under the recommended process conditions.

7 Benefits of Dymax SpeedMask 718 Thermal Spray Maskant

  • Fast light curing: Cures within seconds under suitable UV or visible-light equipment.
  • Thermal spray resistance: Protects selected areas during APS, HVOF, wire arc, and D-gun coating.
  • High adhesion: Provides dependable masking on recommended nickel alloys and high-temperature steel.
  • Thixotropic consistency: Supports controlled masking of surfaces, edges, cavities, and recessed areas.
  • Hard cured barrier: Resists demanding flame-spray and coating environments.
  • Solvent-free processing: Contains no added nonreactive solvents requiring evaporation.
  • Clean removal: Supports burnout removal at a minimum of 650°C with minimal residual ash.

Application and Light-Curing Guidance

Clean all surfaces before application and remove oil, grease, mold release, dust, and other contamination. Protect the uncured resin from ambient and artificial light by using fully light-blocking needles, reservoirs, and feed lines. Dispense the required bead or cavity fill, then cure using validated Dymax spot, flood, focused-beam, or conveyor equipment.

Cure speed depends on light intensity, lamp distance, coating thickness, required cure depth, and oxygen exposure. Published reference times for a 0.38 mm coating include approximately 60 seconds at 50 mW/cm², 30 seconds at 200 mW/cm², and 10 seconds with a 10 W/cm² BlueWave 200 system. Production settings must be qualified using the actual component geometry, coating thickness, and curing equipment.
